How Ambidextrous Is A Right Hand Stock ?

Bit of a silly sounding question but I'm a left handed as is my youngest girl but my wife and eldest daughter are right handed, none of them have ever fired a gun but my wife is interested in trying it out and my children are mad keen on going out with me shooting with my HMR and 12 bore and the natural progression would be to start them off with an air rifle, of course I would also want to play about with it and use it around the farm yard on rats etc.

So with funds being the limiting factor how much of a handicap would it be for me being lefty to use a right handed stock with a raised cheek piece or would I be better off getting them a junior type gun to try out first and upgrade to something better later on ? thinking I may just be able to stretch to a HW break barrel or similar if that would suit them as well if it isn't too heavy ?

There's a lot of ambidextrous stocks out there now mate

 

I can't swear for the HW range but, my 97 is ambi, so was my old HW30.

Ambidextrous is Only Ambidextrous up to a point, so is a right or left handed, as you know all mass produced stocks are made for the majority and not the individual. If you are not worried about how it looks then all stocks will be fine. All can be padded out with a tea towel or something.

Well if your not in a rush and not bother,d about make and model iv just picked up three old rifles tonight one right hand and one ambi that im going to refurb

 

at the moment one will not cock and the other will but wont hold it and will go off by its self

 

the relum is in a bad way so that is not going up as im going to give it to SI once done

 

but these will be put up for some one to grab

 

once the refurbs are done

 

iv got a hw35 coming tomorrow to be completely stripped and redone that will have to come first as its for a member off here but ill try and get the other two done in between doing the hw35.

 

Iv got to put them up on the forum Paul so keep an eye out and see if you can grab them

 

or if the lads say you can have them thats ok with me

 

its only fair way to do it .

Would/could you not have a try shooting right handed? My brother is left handed but shoots right handed after using my rifles over the years.

I've found most stock ambi really. Annoyingly I'm left eye dominant but right handed. I've often found it's not actually around the cheek piece that's the problem, it's the pistol grip. Apart from say the pro sport wood, generally most stocks are ambi or can be shot either way. The CS or any custom stocks don't really count, as they bought as retro fit I suppose.

You would think with one- in -three people being left handed there would be a lot more choices for left-handed or ambidextrous sporting air rifles (and full-bore cartridge come to that!) around. I'm left-handed and left eye dominant and it's been a pain in the arse to find a really desirable rifle like the Air Arms Prosport is off-limits to lefties like us!

 

Well, anyway....

 

If you are interested in a Weihrauch spring rifle, there is the HW98 which is a very accurate break-barrel and ambidextrous with an adjustable butt-stock cheek piece.. The

 

HW97 underlever is a beauty too and its right-handed Bavarian Sporter stock and high comb can be easlily and comfortably shot from your left shoulder while providing a fine gun for your right-handed family members to try their hand with.

 

I have such a right handed HW97 in .177 calibre and it's really lovely. I have no problems whatsoever shooting left shoulder with mine.

Thanks a lot guys, it's your knowledge and enthusiasm which has actually sparked my interest in air rifles, I already own shotguns and a rimfire but really got a nagging pull towards air rifles now listening to you lot !

My HMR is actually a right handed one as far as the action goes but the stock is ambidextrous I find it makes sense when using on sticks and after all these years I won't be able to swap to shooting right as it just doesn't compute in my brain even though I played sport to a decent level in several sports playing right handed and could pass of either hand in rugby, shooting and cricket I have never been able to do right handed,yet played hockey right handed !

Thanks Bigmac I will keep an eye out on the forum when they are done and Pianoman was great to hear of a lefties experiences especially on the HW's as I am a sucker for nice wood on a gun.

I'm a left handed shooter but only buy ambi or rhnguns as from my experienced nce they sell better when I get bored of em s409 and the like are fairly in comfortable with the swept o er cheekpiece but you can get used to em
