Glyn..... 5,208
Now there are very few I would gift a pup to but still would to those very few but if I ever had spare I'd sell them rather than trust strangers again 4 Quote Link to post
shaneg 2,578
I've been offered 4 or 5 pups for free this year of lads that would much rather know how there litter turns out weather it's good or bad. I personally wouldn't sell a dog if I didn't think enough of you to gift you a pup I defently wouldn't sell you a pup 7 Quote Link to post
Rabbit Hunter 6,613
IMO a topic like this is wasted. For the likeminded lads this stuff is second nature and doesn't need explaining and for the others? Well they're never in it for the long run and think they can buy success and respect rather than earn it. 13 Quote Link to post

fagaen 282
I was given a bitch from a lad of this site turned out a spot on bitch . I woyld pay for a pup if i had to and peopke sometimes do need to cover cost of feeding pups and maybe jabs so i do understand why some lads sell not everybody can afford to gift every pup but having said that i disagree when its about profit . Its just the way i was taught when i got into the game and the lads i got to know told me what theyconsider right and wrong 1 Quote Link to post
Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Was speaking to a lad off here while back ,a lad that has gifted his fair share I know and we both agreed the bigger circle the bigger the rogue .Gift pups to those worthy not to mates mates on a whim .Never see your success as a thing to spread about for you will surely get shafted and it ain't a nice feeling . 3 Quote Link to post

That comes down to having a trusted circle like you say mate. But I suppose the more pups you breed and put out the greater the risk of being shit on 1 Quote Link to post
Who 179
It's a tight rope. Sell dogs and you have no say. Gift dogs and run the risk of having no say and losing what you could have made. I got out of dogs due to kids and a relationship break up and was a big mistake and it's took me a long time to get something suitable again. I've finally ended up with a good bitch that I'm going to put to this summer all being well and I'm going to gift all pups I don't keep back and hope that there's some decent lads that keep in contact and don't abuse them. As I keep myself to myself and my mates who did it no longer do, they will be gifted to strangers and that's just the gamble I'll have to take. Expect nothing and you won't be disappointed! 1 Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
Reading through one of the other threads it had me thinking about how many of you lads gift pups out. And how many of you sell them? All the terriers in my Kennels have been given to me. Either by lads I dig with or lads that have been good enough to trust me with carrying on there line. Someone already said it but for me it comes down to respect. I have nothing but respect for the lads that trusted me with there family of dogs. So I would never sell or pass on any of those dogs. If they turn out to be worth breeding from my first port of call will be the lads they came from to seek a suitable stud. Then any pups will be given out amongst lads I dig with and obviously back to the original breeder. Now by doing this and staying in touch you always have access and knowledge about how the line is doing. How siblings are fairing in there work and the peace of mind that you will always have a direction to go in the future. Its an unwritten pact. If work is all that matters then why does money ever need to change hands? Spot on post. IMO money ruins working dogs. How can you say that when there's two of your buddies churning out pups with false pedigrees up this half of our island. Maybe you didn't know but it's the truth. Personally I have no problem with someone selling surplus stock, adults or pups, but when that surplus is 20 + a year then they're a dealer. Quote Link to post
Corkman 944
I usually don't bother my arse replying to you as you are just an irritant. I have lots of friends....... not like some or do you want to be more precise? And my opinion is just that, my opinion and all my friends know exactly how I feel about selling working dogs. No secret there. But whatever someone else chooses to do with "their" dogs is "their" business, no matter what I think or believe. It doesn't affect me. It also doesn't mean a man would have good or bad dogs in their yard if they sell them? It's what less knowledgeable men do with the purchased dogs is usually the problem. Some if they are crap try to recoup their money and others wouldn't know a good one from bad or even get enough work for a dog. Plenty good dog men have sold dogs it just ain't my thing. & I'm lucky enough to be involved with a group of people with the type I like to keep not to have to worry about buying any dogs anytime soon. I agree 100% that plenty of good terriermen have sold terriers and hopefully they'll continue to do so or so many new comers might have no chance to join the fancy. But what's your opinion on those who breed from 4 or 5 bitches a year, fake pedigrees and repeat matings that didn't work out the first time ? Would you bother with such folk ? 2 Quote Link to post

fat man 4,741
There nothing against lads if they want ta sell pups a lad is entitled ta it's just lads have gone into over drive in recent years. Its always been around Chesney ,just not highlighted until the likes of facebook and thl and such came about, theres always been dealers just out there for a quick buck and no consideration towards the dogs,it could be terriers this wk lurchers next wk and they will still come and tell you there bred of such and such lines and they have the same line years but then there is people that like to hear this and buy just because of this.A friend of mine some years back gave 2 weeks wages for a pup of a certain man that had a red dog that was supposed to be the bees knees.I and another friend had actually seen this same dog come away and told our other mate but it was no use his mind was made up and he was buying the pup,dam to the pup had actually never been dug to as she was only a young bitch and the dog had caught her, needless to say after 2 years of feeding and rearing the pup was utter shite. 1 Quote Link to post
