It's a bit shit but peanuts compared to the two every day that are poached in SA's Kruger National Park.

It does make me laugh that when hauls of black market horn and ivory are confiscated the result is to destroy them as some sort of symbol or statement. Far more sensible, although uncomfortable for the environmentalist sorts, would be to flood the market and consequentially conservation budgets with these confiscated gains. The market doesn't just disappear with lack of supply, it drives the price up making the risk of poaching more rewarding!

It's time conservationists had a dose of realism and pragmatism...

Thats a bit of a short sighted view in itself though as you will grow the market for the products and when you run out of stock, there will be a higher demand than ever, they should flood the market with fake horn (toe nail clippings) that would take the shine off these fancy parties once word got round they were drinking toenails

Why would it necessarily grow the market? They're not increasing supply just taking the revenue from what part of it they can catch. And it's not a stand alone solution, it's a means of making things better than they are. It's all very well pretending that these things don't have a value and burning them to prove it, unfortunately it's totally ideological. These animals have a high value on the black market and they're being raped because of it. Making them more valuable and ignoring an obvious revenue to protect them doesn't help them at all. It's time to try something new.

Not sure how you are going to kid someone that a bag of toe nails is a rhino horn, lol.

Ha I'm working on the presumption its ground up prior to sale though turning up to a party with a 4ft rhino horn would definitely have the ladies flocking round!

It'll never stop aslong as the government's of the countries that buy them want it to so economic sanctions are probably the way forward.

There's vast amounts of money already in animal conservation so thinking out loud I'm sure other steps could be taken, you could get something like the alarm systems they use in old folks homes that send a signal when they fall over or there heart stops, send it to a rapid reaction force with a chopper and bobs your mother's brother? Probably stupid but if someone clever can't think of how to stop people killing a few hundred 3 tonne rhino then there's summat wrong
