Here Ratty Ratty

Recommended Posts

I took my son in law ratting for the first time tonight, he was using his Ultra XL along with my old NV set up and as this was the first time he has shot any live quarry, I really needed to be on hand to help.

Now as eager as I was to try out my fac Impact, I had to be very aware that cattle were all around us in the sheds and the rats just outside the sheds after the cattle feed. I know things can be a little tricky at first using NV with lots of eyes looking back at you and in this case many of them were cattle so high alert on my part.

Despite me talking Simon through the do's and don't's of shooting next to livestock, the rats were still showing themselves and not put off by us talking. I also let Si use my trigger grip tripod to assist him which it did and he did manage to shoot about 8 or 9 rats so he was very happy and once I was happy to leave him for ten minutes, I popped over to a large feed holding bay where the scaley tails were very active tonight which at long last gave me the chance to use the Impact........................oh my goodness, I love this gun, the rats on the other hand don't like it one little bit :D

I don't know about you but when I am shooting on my own, I more or less know where the rats are for picking up BUT tonight apart from the ones I shot in the feed bay, I had no idea where the hell they were and as my head light was starting to run out of steam, I had to settle for about a dozen for pick ups.

We just finished as the rain started so a good night for me with the Impact and a good night for Simon on his first ratting adventure however he was not impressed by the smell of the farm :censored: ah well he will just have to get used to it.

No photo's I am sad to say but it was more important to concentrate on the job in hand and keep things nice and safe.

Sounds like an excellent night Phil

What power were you using the impact at?

As I had done some short range zeroing at full power, I decided not to fart around and left it at 45ft/lb Jon. I have put my name down for a 12lt air tank which are being retested this week, Impact and Rapid FAC guns get through some air................................. :icon_eek:

One annoying thing was that I had forgotten to take the H&N Baracuda Hunter Extreme pellets which I really wanted to try out so that will have to wait until next time but as there is quite a bit of rain due over the next few days, I think it will be next week. oooer, I said 'next' 3 times in one sentence, oh well.

A .25 at 45 ftlb on the rats :o

...... I bet you could shoot them in the arse and still get a clean kill

I like your style Phil :thumbs:

I can't imagine there'll be much head left when you hit them with the Baracudas.

I popped back down to the farm this lunchtime to have a look to see if there were any ferals around but this time armed with the H&N pellets. Oh my word do they stop what they hit. I only stayed for 20mins while the farmer and staff had their dinner but managed to drop 4 pigeon from the cattle shed roofs. I have to say one was pure luck as I have not done any longer range shooting to establish hold over points nevertheless when I put the rangefinder on the dead bird it was 52mt and stone dead.

The local buzzard seemed to be grateful for an easy lunch.

I am very impressed with these pellets and look forward to doing some range work with them.

I've seen what the h&n's do to birds in 177 phil

you won't be picking them up at that power you'll be using a shovel and you'll have to teach the buzzard how to use a straw

bring on the action shots/ photos :thumbs:

Listen you are talking to an ole tart here so how the hell do I do action shots because I am not walking around with my DSLR in one hand and the Impact in another.

It is easier for you to have a play with the Humber Canon yourself.................... :whistling:

I am not good with modern technology boys.

Not sure about the effect of those H&N Si, it may be more effective at lower power, can't tell you until the wind blows the birds off the roof unless of course the buzzard gets them all before they fall off. I don't really think I will see the effect until I have a go on the rats.
