MikeyMJL 128
Alright lads. I've got a 1st x beddy whippet pup, 4 months old. Very happy with his progress so far, but he does go deaf when playing with other dogs. When I eventually get his attention he comes straight back, but could anyone recommend a gun dog whistle to use? Don't really know which pitch would be best. Cheers Quote Link to post
Casso 1,261
Don't worry about whistles bud focus on him paying attention to you , the more he tunes into other things the less he focuses on you, At that age I want him to feel that I'm his whole world 1 Quote Link to post

MikeyMJL 128
I play a lot of tug of war with him, got a cracking retrieve already. When no dogs are around he doesn't venture far and comes back immediately when called. He's my first pup and he's come on really well. Just very playful with other dogs. I just thought it would be a good idea to grab his attention because I cannot whistle for shit! Quote Link to post

(I look on the gun dogs section, and a few YouTube clips...) how is it that most people have the same brand whistle, and use the same commands, and yet their dogs know to listen for the right toot? (I used a cheap whistle from pets at home, because the musicians in my family told me if it was poorly made it would have a unique pitch) Quote Link to post

Yeah, that makes sense. I've recently had a coupla epiphanies with my little dog where I've realised that he's actually much more tuned in to subtleties than I'd thought. Quote Link to post
Blueboybilly 164
I use the ACME 211:5 Tried other cheap whistles before that before settling with this because it was celearly the best. Trained my whippet on it from 8 weeks old and his recall is impaccable. The trick is (when training) - don't call him in when you know that he might not come in. Only call him in when you know he will come back to start with.. basically don't give him the option to fail 2 Quote Link to post
MikeyMJL 128
Cheers for the advice, I'm sure he will pick it up quickly. I've listened to the recordings and I prefer the 211.5. Local gun shop sells them so I'm picking one up tomorrow Quote Link to post
