But the English weren't behaving like saints over in France gnasher.

They thought they were still proper hooligans.

Acting like a bunch of idiots.throwing bottles and plastic picnic chairs.

And the Russians put them in there place.

Gnasher's spot on about the origins and I guess heyday of football 'hooliganism' being a culture.., certainly back then.

Times have changed.., football's changed.., cctv fcuked a lot up and made it too easy to get nicked after the event. It can't ever be what it was, or on the scale of what it was again. Shame really.

Probably just lamenting my lost youth but it was as big a part of UK youth culture in the 80's as punks and skins, mods and rockers were before. I just think it's a shame that there doesn't seem to be an equivalent nowadays.

Late 70,s to mid ,s was my time mate it was an enjoyable few years i used to get bollocked by the older high profile lads for not taken it seriously enough they wanted to run things like an army unit but i was just a young lad having a laugh.......besides which i love my footie too much once they started dishing out banning orders i was out of there it would of killed me to get banned from footie grounds whereas the true hardcore football hoolies didnt care,hence most of them have probably not been in a football ground since !

It does make me laugh when folk talk about rucking at the footie in a " we was better than you " kind of way....the whole culture wasnt about winning or losing it was about standing on......it was about 10 of you taking the shortcut home round the back of the flats and getting caught out by 30 rival fans,then looking at each other as if to say " shit what now "......and then marching on with a do or die attitude....it wasnt about winning,the memories we all have of those days were of handfuls of lads taking the Shed End at Chelsea or the North Bank at Highbury......or getting annihilated by firms with double or treble your numbers and still having them go away saying " f**k me that Icf lot had some bollocks about them "........or memories about away days having a laugh with your pals or getting your 150 quid jumper nicked or ripped it wasnt all about the violence......back in those days it was a popular culture amongst young lads in England today its not no big deal times move on.

I might be wrong Pesky so maybe you can tell me but the hey day of the culture in England was the 70,s and ,s whereas in Scotland it was the 90,s ?.....ive chatted with lads at England games before who followed English clubs in the 70,s/80,s but then attached themselves to a Scottish club in the 90,s purely for that reason does that sound right ?

Thats a great response , with the way some people are posting on here i wasnt sure if i would get a macho man response . What with their being a equivalent these days im not so sure . With the whole brotherhood that comes with fighting you may be right but just because your intense bond with like minded people that came from football fighting , maybe others these days get the same feeling but without the violence doing different things . If youve never experienced it you dont miss it or crave it . Thats my taking on it anyway .

 

For what its worth im glad the football violence has been reduced to tiny level . My boss has been going to see chelsea regular from south wales since the 80's . When he was up there in the pubs around game time he got into fights etc . Nothing to do with organised hoolaganism but just general fighting in a pub and he has told me how glad he was that it died . Like gnasher he loves his football and he started taking both his boys to chelsea games from 6 years old and taking them around the pubs with him before and after games (his sober mrs was with them. poor woman lol) . He said if it was the same as the 80's he doesnt think he would have taken his kids to football until a much older age . And from taking them a real young age their both intense chelsea fans . Love everything about the club . As he says its all hypothetical but maybe if hed have had to wait until they were older for him to be comfortable taking them they might not have taken to football so much .

 

Last thing , you cant change the past and for those who were involved in it in the past and it was a great part of your life im happy for you . But at base level when it takes the headlines from the actual football which most are their to watch its a problem .

The Russian's of today would do exactly the same. Like J1985 said, the Russian's still do national service and are at least trained in combat. Last I knew that didn't take place over here back in the 70's and 80's. Different gravy pal.

Couldn't really say about the 90's. For me it's heyday was the mid 80's. The 'casual' scene was around from the early 80's but probably took off around about '85. By the early 90's it was over for me, and a lot of the guys I'd run around with. No doubt it was still going, and I think maybe the Rangers mob maybe got a bit better organised around that time and 'affiliated' with English clubs. Aberdeen and then Hibs had been the top firms until then. But I think in terms of it being a cool new cultural thing it was over. Maybe the underground dance scene and drugs took a load of guys off what was left of the terraces.

I don't agree with your opinion, violence today is completely different to back in the day and darker with it. I don't know if this is the case for football but a fight back in the 80's was usually a straightener and that's it. These days it's knives, bats, jumping people, arson, you name it. Agree, I got jumped about 10 years ago when I was 18...6 lads with no interest in a fair fight...just wanted to prove a point.
