Caravan Monster 323
we cant work alone mate, min is a 2plus 1 gang really That's the problem I'm having - I only work with stone and it's nearly all repair work on old buildings, got away with working alone for years, but I'm not physically up to doing the bigger jobs with a lot of heavy graft by myself anymore. Trouble is the job is a bit specialised and the only people I know who can do it right are even older and at retirement age. I have it in mind to train up a couple of people, which is going to cost time + financially, but I can't see any other way to keep going until I can find a way out of the trade altogether. There isn't the business to directly employ people and I don't want to end up organizing everything and taking on all the financial responsibility for jobs, for others to make the same money for just turning up. Hence why interested to learn how gangs of brick layers share organisation and responsibility for jobs.
Qbgrey 4,143
yes its difficult, the farmers here dont like paying for a labourer on 100 to 150 aday, they try and give us polish fruit picker, pisses me off.once you get a bit older you shouldnt be grafting,i get the younger ones doing that now.why dontyou get a young keen lad (not easy)to labourer and jump on the walls to learn. keepitcovert 842
Im getting about 70 job offers a week from agencies ,old firms ect , £20 an hour daywork, or could make over a grand easy on price, HSE and greedy firms not taking on apprentices created this situation, now its biting them on the arse. Caravan Monster 323
Yeah QB, that's the plan, I'm going to try and get a young lad and someone a bit older who I know can graft and has a sensible head on their shoulders. Having recently been able to watch how a larger firm work, I know I've got to slow down. Sounds like my rates need to go up 20% as well. Make the best of the good times whilst they last
DogMan85 722
The apprentice system doesn't work. Like my brother said, why would any bricky on price work want to train up an apprentice? They would be taking a massive pay cut to train the person up, doesn't make sense. keepitcovert 842
The apprentice system worked well when the company paid them, Its not up to the men in the gang to pay for their training, lets face it how many hangers on do you end up paying for. The CSCS cards are a joke why should i have to pay every 5yrs for a card when ive got my papers to prove i served my time. The health and safety test is a joke give me 5 minutes and i could train a chimp to pass it.
Qbgrey 4,143
yup that cscs is a totall joke.the reason thiers no aprentices is true in the sbove post.also a school leaver willing to jump on the hod can earn 100 to 140 aday straight off.
ollieollie 766
I've tried to up my gang from 2&1 because of the holiday problem. Do you think any of the brickies that i have tried out were any good, NO. Good blokes are getting looked after atm so you get eejits coming out the woodwork claiming to be brickies as they've heard the money is good, although its a good time for us now it can be frustrating! Tiercel 6,986
The way they roll / don't roll the compo / muck is enough to tell if they actually know what they are doing. TC
jiggy 3,209
If a bricky is having a conversation and he farts and the conversation is over before the fart ends then he is a good one.?. A builder told me once if you are able to make a cup of tea well then you are able to lay bricks.
