Wellieburn Wilson 33
Recall on the lamp and up the local dog park is spot on just when out over the hills where hoofs have been he goes deaf. Quote Link to post
Wellieburn Wilson 33
A like a wander over the hills during the day and he's self rewarded working the woods which sometimes isn't ideal next to farm houses and public. Ad just like to have more control as in whistle and come call off the scent. Quote Link to post

Snifferboy 659
I doubt you'll be able to keep him under control where there is hooves about... If the dog uses it's nose to full effect and has been able to get close then it will always choose that over what ever you can offer it (in my limited experience). Don't take him for walks in the woods, or where ever you know you will come across that particular quarry or keep him on the lead. Other than that reside yourself to the fact that you may loose him for a while and plan your time accordingly .... I have dogs that will hunt on and on if given the chance so I have to keep on top of them or not let them go... Luckily when we are out ferreting they are generally focussed on the whats going on below ground... The only lurchers that I have seen not hunt on and on are more heavily sighthound saturated, they tend to be the ones that come back quicker, but I'm sure its all in how you start them off and if you have spent time in the woods early on and the dog has found the thunder of hooves to be pretty exciting then that is one can of worms you won't be getting the lid back on!!! tb25 4,627
f**k I love it when there nose hits the ground ..Heart stopping moments but yes it's a pain..lol Quote Link to post
Wellieburn Wilson 33
Not ideal if your just a wander wi the wife and she brings her pug, off mine goes she's left standing in a feild and me off after him.haha Quote Link to post
northern lad 2,292
Is there anywhere you can walk him where theres no game ,so the his only focal point is you?Plenty of recalls ,rewarded with treats, drum it into him. Quote Link to post
Maximus Ferret 2,063
If your game to try it I'd say keep him close in so you can keep a good eye on him. Most dogs signal the moment when they hit that particular scent. If he's near you and you call as soon as you see him light up you've a chance of stopping him. The more you succeed (if at all ) the better he should get but it's not easy and not foolproof so keep him on the lead with the wife and keep him on in dodgy places. Garmin GPS has been suggested and that's a good idea too. It's a common enough problem......."FENTON......FENTON" When I say close I mean like 20 to 30 feet and you could try a long line too. Wellieburn Wilson 33
Yes the local park there's no game atall and he's spot on comes straight back and his attention is on me, it's just nose to the ground and full speed anywhere there seems to be a scent. The gps is alll good and well doesn't stop the problem of hearing a gun shot and the worst or getting reported for an unruly mutt. 1 Quote Link to post
