king 11,972
Getting terriers fit isn't really a topic that's mentioned at all on here. And neither is diet.i haven't bought a tin of dog food for over 20yrs only raw diet the dogs get I'm biking my bull x 6 Miles a day on country lanes. I hardly turn a pedal he pulls me there and back. The terrier is also biked 6 miles a day. Then 2 Mile walk in the evening. I've allways enjoyed getting the dogs fit. And can't wait for the temp to start dropping in August to really get the fitness levels up. What's your methods of getting your terriers fit. For the coming season. I know there's lads out there who dont do any fitness not even walking the terriers. And expect them to work hard for hrs on end on a day out. You aint going to finish the London marathon if you've spent 6 months on the couch. Then turn up at the start line. 5 Quote Link to post
Kaizer Sozĕ 266
You breed em right keep em right & feed em right. All this is a waste of time if theyre not fit! I dont buy into the need to bike em twice a day or treadmills ... Just get them out daily for 1&1/2 hrs open hunting in the fields (or on the lead) as best you can. Then you know you've done your best ..the rest is up to them! 6 Quote Link to post
socks 32,253
It depends what job their expected to do which will dictate what type of fitness they will need ....... Quote Link to post
chesney 5,450
Fitness helps and it's good ta get the dogs but when he goes ta ground then it's a matter does he have the heart to stay does he want it. 4 Quote Link to post

Getting the heart rate up and maintaining it for a while. Just seems to be not much mentioned on fitness etc. 1 Quote Link to post
king 11,972
It depends what job their expected to do which will dictate what type of fitness they will need ....... But surely being over fit is better than under fit 100% of the time. 1 Quote Link to post

What I mean is a bushing terrier will gain from a different type of fitness than a digging dog ... different muscle groups ate worked etc ...... 2 Quote Link to post

I wonder how many dogs have walked through lack of fitness if the dog is blowing out of his arse.he surely will lack heart once the dog is exhausted. 7 Quote Link to post
Kaizer Sozĕ 266
Once the hunting season begins digging fitness also kicks in! Do you think terriermen of old even knew what a threadmill is? Fitness was brought about through hours walking through the countryside & then work itself! 5 Quote Link to post

Do you think terriermen of old even knew what a threadmill is? Fitness was brought about through hours walking through the countryside & then work itself!I haven't mentioned a treadmill. What if someone has 10 terriers in the kennels. At a push could walk 4 a time so that's all day spent walking the dogs. I think a push bike or treadmill would be a great help if you've got a good few dogs on the yard. 1 Quote Link to post

chesney 5,450
Where did I say fitness doesn't help of course it helps but I'v had the animals in good peak condition what I'm saying is some alot them lacked something when it came to doing the job they were supposed ta do but they looked well on the leads when I geting up in all weather's at all hours walking jogging with them up hills down hills they loved that but most when it came to hard graft didn't have it in them. Maybe I should have kept them and prance them around a show ring lol. 1 Quote Link to post
Zilverhaze 1,627
for me it's very important. I use a pedal bike and amlucky enough to own a small 50cc motor bike and be able to free run them behind me used to do a hour in the mornin with flirt pole and at night take em out on the bike n sprint em and just blast around for a bit on the dirt tracks I think if you get them cardio fit then with work they strengthen the right muscles and no matter how fit I thought id got them after a few good digs they look better 3 Quote Link to post
leethedog 3,071
2/3 hours a day free running on rough terrain every day and flirt pole a couple of times a week not kept in pens have the hole garden to romp and play seems to do the trick . In fact I'm off out now in the pissing rain and dark at 4.30 am these are the collars I bought for morning walks https://www.wish.com/m/c/5593b4154be87a5abe95968d?hide_login_modal=true&from_ad=pla4&_display_country_code=GB&gclid=Cj0KEQiAzsvEBRDEluzk96e4rqABEiQAezEOoD6kGsrZNVD-CLI62fi3WOTZTsjQle-lZx21xqQDPqYaAu1g8P8HAQ Edited February 3, 2017 by leethedog Quote Link to post
