Nik_B 3,790
What are peoples thoughts on house coal versus smokeless? House coal is hard to control and burns faster (smells amazing as well lol) but is very cheap. I wonder which is more cost efficient I prefer house coal myself I've tried smokless and the high calorie coal (can't remember the name) and to be honest wasn't that impressed and always come back to house coal but all that said being a cabinet maker has its perks I'm currently burning 3 x3 skids that our wood comes stacked on with a bit of south American walnut and a little house coal I find a mix of wood a house coal the best as it all breaks down into a nice easy to deal with ash . I wonder if there is a way of measuring the efficiency or heat output. I can get 20Kg bags of house coal for just over a fiver which is much cheaper than the anthracite we used to get. I was more thinking about which is more cost effective. I really like the smell of house coal and (am I the only one?) I love watching the smoke come out of the chimney on cold day....if I've just put some fresh coal on I always go outside to watch the smoke pour out of the chimney

Yeah I had some trebles and that was a seam running through one of them ...luckily I spotted before it went on the fire ...I gently removed it and polished it up ...still needs a bit more polishing but its getting there

PeskyWabbits 464
I keep a bag of house coal for rainy days - when I can't be arsed going out to the wood store. You have to burn smokeless if you live at less than 500 feet above sea level, else you run the risk of a letter from Environmental, then maybe prosecution if you don't comply. But.. with most councils short on staff, you need to be dobbed in by a neighbour before they will react. If your stove isn't sealed or you are running an open fire, you can get black bogeys with house coal.
Squeamish5 309
Not as impressive as Kanny's piece of amber, but we once had a live frog in a bag of coal. Was v freaky.
