neil cooney 10,416
I know Glyn, that's why I said I could understand where he was coming from. Phil Drabble seen a lot of terrierwork in a time when it was done nice and quietly by craftsmen. My favourite piece by Phil Drabble was "Fox Poaching in Daylight" in Ted Walshes book "The Poachers Companion" . The terrierman , even though he wasn't named, was Bert Gripton. 1 Quote Link to post

dytkos 17,815
Jacks Game with the Giraffe ? Don't remember that and I seen all of Jacks Game. Another favourite of mine and IMO he was a proper countryman was Phil Drabble, even if he wasn't liked by a lot of terriermen. Personally I could get where he was coming from with his remarks. The giraffe was Jack Charltons nickname cos of his long neck lol Cheers, D. Quote Link to post

walshie 2,804
Always used to watch his program after school. I can't remember whether it was "Out of Town" or "The Old Country" but he was in his shed showing some old implement and how it worked. He was very good in "How!" too. Quote Link to post
MOLE265 792
Always used to watch his program after school. I can't remember whether it was "Out of Town" or "The Old Country" but he was in his shed showing some old implement and how it worked. He was very good in "How!" too. He was an ambassador for country pursuits and the country way of life. If only we could have these types of programmes back on television with presenters with jacks passion instead of cwis packham and co preaching shiete. JMHO. 3 Quote Link to post

eastcoast 4,166
The first book that I enjoyed reading was Of Pedigree Unknown. Not the first book that I read but the first that I enjoyed reading. I came across it in the local library when I was meant to be looking for something else that I'd been told to read by a teacher from school. I was totally enthralled by that world that was so different to the one I lived in. I was blissfully unaware that most of that world had already gone even then. All that we have left of it now are the Whippets and a form of terrier work that is hanging on by the skin of it's teeth. I was given the opportunity to buy a copy a few years after first borrowing it from the library by a lad that lived on my estate. It was actually the exact same book. The last time I saw Phil Drabble on tele other that One Man and his Dog was a short film about Burt Gripton on BBC2. May sound unbelievable but true. The two things that stick in my mind was Drabble telling us that Mr.Gripton had recently been exporting terriers to Japan. He made a quip that they weren't sure if they were working them or eating them. Not very PC. The other thing was footage of some Mr. Gripton's white dogs at a show. Nice looking typey terriers but a bit snipey headed. Drabble said that they were the result of Mr. Gripton crossing his Jack Russells with Fox Terriers and that the Americans loved them. 3 Quote Link to post
