walshie 2,804
Just sorting through a load of paperwork to see what can be consigned to the bin and I came across some old documents from my Granddad. Not as interesting as the old photo thread from a while back but it's still like looking back in time and seeing how things have changed. Love it. He bought his first house in 1932 and I found the estimate for building a garage on the side before they moved in dated 9th June 1932. The estimate is addressed to his parents' house. "168 Shaftesbury Avenue. W.C." I bet that property would be worth a few quid now if it still exists. Shame building work isn't as cheap as this now: "To erect brick built garage 15ft x 8ft 3in. Double doors at front, part glass. Single door at back with opening sidelight. For the sum of £50.0.0." Sounds cheap, but when you consider the house cost them £700, it was a fortune percentage-wise. I have some Shooting Times of the 50's and 60's and the prices in the advertisements for various items make you weep compared to today lol

jok 3,368
When I left home at age 15, I got on a bus with no knowledge of where I was going to end up with £18 in my pocket. Eventually ended up in Northampton and booked into the YMCA. £4 a week. That w tight times I can tell you. Jok.

jok 3,368
Can't remember them days. We didn't know what money was LOL? School meals which were pretty much inedible and them 1/3 pt bottles of milk which were more like yogurt. 7 mile walk to school and invariably a smack in the head for being late home. Black and white TV. It just could'nt get any worse. Jok
oz0707 65
I dunno 140k house = 10k garage sounds about right or is my maths wrong. Likewise 280k house might have 20k garage. Just shows how well price tracks to value of houses.
