Old Documents

Recommended Posts

Just sorting through a load of paperwork to see what can be consigned to the bin and I came across some old documents from my Granddad.

Not as interesting as the old photo thread from a while back but it's still like looking back in time and seeing how things have changed. Love it.

He bought his first house in 1932 and I found the estimate for building a garage on the side before they moved in dated 9th June 1932. The estimate is addressed to his parents' house. "168 Shaftesbury Avenue. W.C." I bet that property would be worth a few quid now if it still exists.

Shame building work isn't as cheap as this now:

"To erect brick built garage 15ft x 8ft 3in. Double doors at front, part glass. Single door at back with opening sidelight. For the sum of £50.0.0."

Sounds cheap, but when you consider the house cost them £700, it was a fortune percentage-wise.

When I left home at age 15, I got on a bus with no knowledge of where I was going to end up with £18 in my pocket. Eventually ended up in Northampton and booked into the YMCA. £4 a week. That w tight times I can tell you. Jok.

My first pint cost 37p and 20 fags were 61p.....1979 !

Early 80s 57p for 10 JPS

Amazing that in those days they wouldn't think twice about selling fags to a 10 year old lol

When I was a boy, my sainted mum used to send me to the shop for her fags...."and when he gives them to you, say Can she pay you Friday ?" !

I found a receipt made out to my grandad, dated late 1920s, for some massive lights and a load of scrap metal that he bought from some Royal Air Force place to the tune of about £300 !!!...........that was a massive sum in them days, fair play to the old boy he wasn't afraid to lay his money out.

my dad worked in the RAC club when he was about 15, still has his access pass to certain roads in the west end for the coronation

Nice, my gran gave us her ration books which was interesting to look at, she lived in the East End of London.

Can't remember them days. We didn't know what money was LOL? School meals which were pretty much inedible and them 1/3 pt bottles of milk which were more like yogurt. 7 mile walk to school and invariably a smack in the head for being late home. Black and white TV. It just could'nt get any worse. Jok
