Forget a terrier for rabbitin, get yourself a Springer or cocker far better

 

Ive owned both and will only own terriers now,a terrier is more versatile.

what's the kid do if it drops to ground?a spaniel or small lurcher would be a safer bet imo mort.atb dc

I agree your best with a spaniel or lurcher my mate has got a terrier it's only 8 month old and it keeps going to ground on rabbits and he never tried to learn him to do it it's just in his DNA good luck in find a dog anyways mate

You are not required to have insurance to obtain a shotgun certificate, personally I would not shoot without it, and there are plenty of options, BASC being only one of them, but provided you meet the criteria, you will be granted a certificate.

I think if you bring them up as pups on the ferreting game they just learn the plan. Mine would never go to ground on a rabbit no matter how big the hole was. he would keep glancing at the ferret box. But he may have been the exception.

But now a days much as I would love a terrier if I wanted a dog just for ferreting, marking I would head over to the bushing section and look at one of the crosses being used. Much less likely to get you in trouble or spoil your days ferreting by digging a fox 6 foot under a tree

Use the terrier for bushing,leave at home when ferreting.Get a lurcher.

I don't think you can beat a good terrier for putting them to ground and marking my self. Many a time you would get a big old bank of brambles, gorse and on the way pass a couple of easy holes on the edge all ways empty. But there was a dam good chance if there was a rabbit in that thick old cover he would end up in them nice easy holes you just passed after a bit of a run around with the terrier behind him.

Terrier is a waste of time for rabbitin, why anyone would choose one over a spaniel i'l never know!!

Just personal preference like any thing I guess. Never worked a spaniel so can't compare. But I have owned a cracking ferreting terrier that was just magic to work.

Would a spaniel get its nose down and track a rabbit across 3 or 4 hedge rows or for as long as it took. Can a spaniel work cover and spots that are really really tight like a terrier. I don't know but I also imagine a spaniel has its own things going for it like biddability and working tight which some might prefer. Then you have the going to ground thing which could be a right pain now
