my little whippet cross is coming up for 9 months now i think and she just totally ignores me if there is any kind of prey about, i was just putting it down to her in your face, not scared of anything, have a go at anything attitude. when there is no prey about she is as good as gold coming back every time i call her, sorry i cant help.

Yea 11 months is still very young. Im sue she will be fine.

 

I've just bought whistle and am going to try her with that puerly on recall.

 

No matter how she turns out she will have a home for life! She is a family pet firs and a worikng dog second.

 

I am going to work hard at the recall over the christmas holidays.

 

how are your whippets for recall? can you call them off a rabbit or can you call them straigt back if they miss it?

 

My last dog was a lurcher. 1/4 border collie 3/4 greyhound and she would come straight to hand as soon as I called her. I am finding it harder to get the same standard of obediance from the pup.

 

Any sugestions?

 

i can call mine back, and even when all 12 are out they all come back as do the italians which are notorious for poor recall, im not sure if it the pack mentality me being top dog so to speak? my dogs are kenneled so any time with any dog is 100% not just being around me 24/7? the young one i have is back at vehicle as soon as lamp goes out , a whippet is totally different to say a collie lurcher due to the learning and mental patterns , it will come in time , try not to push to hard , she is very keen and eager to please so work on her that way , plenty of praise everytime she does good

 

i start my pups off im keeping back basically when they leave mum , simple name calling and walking to heel , stretch your stride to match theirs so it LOOKS like she is at heel but really its you in stride with her , as they then get bigger they know to stay there ? i have a 10 weeker here who when i call her name will leave the pack to come to me , i have got some fox tails now too and i will be starting after xmas on her bringing them back to me

 

everything takes time and all dogs are different and training will vary?

sounds like you have everything else to a high standard!! im sure you will have no problems at all

there are a few nimrodel dogs, a few poacyn dogs and other names i haven't heard off.

 

 

If anyone has any info on any of the above dogs it would be nice to know how they were in the field.

Ive had her out twice. First time she was really bad at comming back. Second time she was the same. Been working on her recall and she is great but as soon as she was on a rabbit she totally ignored me. Even after the chase she heard me, looked at me and ttally blanked me. Very frustrating. I am going to keep at it but to be honest im not sure what to do. She is very well trained. will sit in the middle of the footbal pitch till i call her. She comes straight to hand but not if she smells a rabbit.

 

Any adveice would be appreciated.

i dont find whippets hard to train never had a problem with live stock

or recall but once there wed to there quarry i would question there

desire for the game if i was able to call them off only my oppinion mate

handy if you could but i doubt it best of luck any way mate

its a tuff one mate its not such a problem through the day as i like a dog

that hunts up but its a pain in the arse if out lamping they some times settle

down when they mature a bit i think all you can do is work on the recall

and wait till she matures a bit all the best with it any way mate i am sure

it will come good in the end

Have been working like hell on the recall.

 

Had her out over our local golf course and she was straight back (mostly) when I called.

 

I am going to keep at it and hopefully it will sink in.

 

I really want to get her out on the lamp but am going to wait a few weeks I think.
