In them days if the country needed you then yes ,it was the rules wasnt it ? These days its choice but back then they needed every man..... id be quite happy for every man to have to do couple years in army after leaving school. Have a friend in the israeli military and over there you have to join army weather you like it or not. So i belive

No different then to now really a superior country .. America going to war with a shitty little country .. Vietnam ... they posed no threat to American shores they just decided they were going to police them and failed badly so it really was down to your own conscious whether you thought it was right to fight or not ... fast forward to the not so distant past and we did the same in Iraq and Afghanistan... however the difference being al Qaeda... Isis ... etc do pose a threat to our shores as did pira the Ira etc so if your that passionate about being patriotic and defending your country like Ali should have you could have joined up and done your bit couldn't you ??? ........

they did not pose a direct threat but they where communists reds under the beds

Yeah why wouldnt he of fought ?

He was the HW champion of the world and the most famous sportsman out there. He would have been used for entertainment and morale purposes only.

i might be wrong here lol, but didnt Joe Louis do the same in WW2 , he did exhibition rounds for the troops out there , but the brown bomber was liked i think more than Ali ever was . :hmm:

You are far from wrong pal, Ali would have done the same kind of things.

Ali was a polarising figure, he didn't want to unite people. I respect his ability in the ring, his charisma and I can even respect that he was inspirational to his black people and probably raised many coloured folks self esteem. He also created and increased a lot of hatred in the black community towards white people which was not necessary, he could have done things differently with good intentions of uniting races. I myself am white and I will never think of somebody who creates hatred toward me or my people as anything less than a c#nt. All you white folk who feel he is some sort of hero, don't you feel at least a little bit like a cuck? I hope that doesn't offend too much it is a genuine question and I don't know a nicer way to ask it.

I think folk tend to get a little bit over eager with their comments when it comes to icons......i just liked the way the man boxed im not particularly interested in all the rest so is he a hero to me of course he,s not but that doesn't mean i dont recognise the accomplishments he made in life......i dont really understand how anybody can use some of the words they use about a man they never ever spoke to it reeks to me of this big brother type scenario where we make judgement on someones entire persona based on what we see of them on the telly !

I have given him credit every time I have posted about him, I just don't like many of his beliefs and especially some of the people and organisations he associated with. I don't like him and I never have, even watching him as a child I wanted Joe Frazier to knock him out and that was well before I understood his personal or political beliefs. I recognise he is considered an icon but that doesn't mean I have to like him.

Any of see the interview on Aussie tv where they show Marciano talking about Ali?

Yep the one where Marciano is questioning is heart and chin as it had not been tested yet. I think he passed both questions with flying colours, shame Rocky didn't live to see it....

So let me get this right ..... cassius klay shouldnt of had to go and fight for his country because 1: he was a talented boxer and because 2: he didnt have the same rights as the white man ??? Lmao

Well if you dont like it then leave ? Funny how peoples real views come out when its someone they thought highly of getting a bit of stick .. then start getting touchy and handing out insults I.e "prick" and " not worth a pig " if you dont like it lads f**k off out the country and settle in these little shitholes you love so much .... got nasher trying to belittle people calling them pricks and "son" haha and tomo saying your not worth a pig haha proper bell ends

Maybe if you spoke to people like a grown up you would be spoken to like a grown up ;)

As regards all this " fight for his country " and " should of stood shoulder to shoulder on the battle field " :D .....he would never have been allowed to fire a shot he was the heavyweight champion of the world do you think he would of been slung in the trenches with an M16 ?......my father was in the Raf during the second world war but wasnt allowed to do any more than instruct pe as he was a professional athlete........Ali was making a point he wasnt dodging a war.....i have no real opinion either way on what he did but i can recognise the guts it took to refuse rather than mince about pretending to be a soldier.

I did not know that they gave preferential treatment to athletes in world war 2,there lives should not be worth more because they were good at sports, you learn something every day
there a film out based on a true story about an American soldier who was an Olympic athlete who was caught by the japs so I thought they would be treated the same also
