Blackbriar 8,569
Since we don't have a gardening section as such, so I thought I'd try here.... I've had a new fence up, after clearing three skip loads of ivy from the old one, but my neighbour won't do the same. Obviously, I don't want it growing back over my side, as it gets in the gutters, on the walls etc. Someone told me to find a good sized stem and knock some copper nails in, or drill a hole and insert a piece of copper pipe. Allegedly, the copper corrodes and produces copper sulphate, which kills the plant, without him being any the wiser. Is there any truth in this ?

sussex 5,777
copper nails won't do the job , use a proprietary weed killer ..I did some fast growing willow by boring a hole and filling with neat roundup ..

PeskyWabbits 464
I had a similar issue. I have a outbuilding that borders my neighbour's garden. She has a ivy type plant that started on a frame fastened to the stone wall outer ( I did kick up a fuss at the time but because it was on a frame I conceded) So, it has spread, across and into the wall and under the stone slates. So a big problem. 1st step, have a nice chat to say I need to remove it. This didn't go very well as it is her favourite plant 2nd step, show the damage - pointing compromised, tubers under the slates. So she says, you can remove what is inside the shed but please leave the main plant. 3rd Step. By now the tubers are not only under the roof but all over the top. So I have been mixing a small dilution of glysophate with water and dipping the tubers into bags of this inside the shed. No real difference Then I put glysophate on the main root. Again no real difference. 4th Step. She went on holiday. I carefully lifted the soil and surface plants. dug down about 6 inches and severed the main root. Then carefully put things back. Then under each slate I cut each tuber. It is f***g dead.
