beany01 223
Well I went today with Simon, and it was a cracking day. He didnt use purse nets, but long and stops nets due to his dog, and i learned a fair bit. Nice approachable bloke and his mate Lee were soon showing me how its done. It wasnt just a watching session, he soon got me involved, doing a big of digging, showing me how the ferret finder worked, and having a play with the probe. It wasnt long before I was pulling up rabbits and dispatching them in the long and stop nets. His dog definitely knew the game in progress. Even as the sun was falling below the trees, Lees ferrets were getting tired, couldnt really flush the rabbits, but his dog was still marking, he ran to the motor to get fresh ferrets. The hob soon fanged hold of it, and it was quickly dispatched. His drive to hunt is very quickly shown, he has as much drive as any dog. Very enjoyable day, and well worth it. Even though the 4 and 5 foot digs were part and parcel of the day, the banter never stopped, even though they were working on Suffolk soil and they were a pair of northeners. 10 Quote Link to post

jok 3,211
4 and 5 foot digs. Your making me fall off the sofa laughing. Last time I had a dig over 2. Foot was, was, was, let me see, 110 years ago. No fcker digs these days. We have robo ferrets in our area, which however are quite expensive. Mr. Ketchum will surely back me up. We have a famous Scottish friend who will give you all the info required but excuse me for being forward but they are rather little and totally without teeth. The rabbits run round and around the said ferrets with disregard. Go on Zeus give him some verbal and get him watching your videos. Jok. 2 Quote Link to post

beany01 223
Well it may seem funny about the digs, but its all dependent on terrain. If you have a layer of rock with 2 foot of soil on top then you will never dig 5Ft. Simon was more than willing to dig himself, but you dont learn much fiddling with your fingers in your pockets. I thought it was good experience of the local terrain, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Some of the ferrets were at 12ft, but they soon moved on fortunately Edited January 14, 2017 by beany01 3 Quote Link to post
Guest vin
good on yer fella for getting out and seeing and experiencing it for real.. If its given you the confidence to get out a have a go yourself..its money well spent. I hope he showed you how to dispatch a bunny quickly whilst still in the nets etc etc... ? That's a biggy for all beginners whether they admit it or not,far too many go out ill advised after listening to bullshit from some guy in the pub or even on these forums sometimes... chopping, stretching, punching, hitting with priests, clubs, sticks etc etc..it terrifies me what some numpties get up to because they were showed the wrong way themselves. He must have also forgot to tell you that when it says 4ft on a mk3 locator its really means 2ft...heheee. 12ft is 6ft..at a push... trust me..lol Quote Link to post
beany01 223
Yes it gave me a good load of knowledge and I would happily go on my own now. The dog was worth its weight in gold, but I haven't got one, and with everything else I won't be getting one. I did notice the mk3 was generous in the depth. A 4 ft hole was only a 3ft dig etc. As a commercial netsman, I did have a good look over stop and long nets to see how they are rigged. They are so basic compared to commercial fishing nets, so I will soon have a few of them on the go! 1 Quote Link to post

springfield 20
£60 what a rip off. There's alot of ferreters out there you don't even here about that would probably take you for free. I would put your £60 in your tank fir fuel and drive around securing more permission as your ground will make you a better ferreted. Best way is to get out in the field and learn. Keep a locator on the ferret and a spade handy enjoy. Alot look at his youtube videos and think it's all easy ferreting they only show you what they want you to see. Quote Link to post
neil b 2,295
Hardly a rip off really, considering some of the idiots out there, at least you know a day out with Simon would cover most aspects of what you would encounter, money well spent I'd say 4 Quote Link to post
