pesky1972 5,289
Good luck to Gary Anderson tonight, I reckon he'll need it. Van Gerwen is in unbelievable form this season, and has taken darts to a new level. His 114.05 average last night was something to behold. If both players can play without the nerves taking over it could be the best game ever by quite some distance. ? Edited January 2, 2017 by pesky1972

And King got knocked out in the second round !...........Some performer that Van Gerwen it will be interesting to see if he can dominate the sport the way Taylor did i think dart for dart he looks a better player but nobody will ever have the longevity Taylor had surely. bracken boy 584
Mvg without injury can take nearly all Taylor's records, if he stays in it for the long haul, the reason the sports at it's highest ever is Phil Taylor , but there will be another mvg and so on because of all the pro tournaments being played by very young players, they are 90% mentally capable by the time they hit the stage. The sports in a good place.
DogFox123 1,379
The level of competition MVG is facing is light years ahead of what Taylor was facing for a big part of his career.
gnasher16 30,121
Whether you class darts as a sport doesnt matter in terms of mental ability and talent its the same as any sport im no expert but Van Gerwen to me seems more naturally talented than Taylor but for sheer mental ability and sporting attitude i don't think ive ever seen better than Taylor in any sport. And its Barry Hearn you want to be thanking for the success the sport is having not Taylor or Van Gerwen........what that family has done for British sport cannot be overlooked. jiggy 3,209
Darts is realistically only big in a handful of country's if it took off global big time then the amount of people playing the game would increase 100 fold which would make the chances of other legends appearing and raising the bar even higher again than today's standard. The 3 dart average is increasing every year for the last 30 or 40 year and will continue to do so for a while yet. Look at the old world darts finals of the ,s with Eric Bristow when they said there will never be his likes again. Them scores might not get you through the first round now.
bracken boy 584
Agree with you gnasher, Hearn has done a terrific job, bristows average dosnt look good on paper, if he was born 20 years later he would be right up there with the very best. pesky1972 5,289
Hearn has done a great job changing the image of the sport but he couldn't have made it the success it is without the improvements made by the quality of play we see now. I think Taylor takes huge credit for that as he set the bar. The final saw averages of 107 (MVG) & 104 (GA) with 44 180's hit! The high scoring and the lethal doubling makes it a much more exciting game to watch. The truth is that the darts the likes of Bristow, Wilson & Lowe threw back in the day might not get them through qualifying for the PDC worlds.

With life changing prize money its bound to attract more players who are going to train harder and dedicate themselves to a much higher standard....in the Bristow/Wilson era it was still predominantly a pub game darts in one hand pint in the other even at the very highest level....with the amount of competitions and tv exposure it gets now the top players can live off the game meaning it will raise the bar like it does in any pro sport.......and again its pretty much all down to Barry Hearns initiative. bracken boy 584
Pesky, I think your totally wrong, In this day bristow, Wilson, Lowe, would all have raised the game as the standard today would bring them along, can you imagine if Taylor was born same date as bristow then you saying Taylor would be lucky to make it through first round hahaha, Edited January 4, 2017 by bracken boy
