walshie 2,804
I've had a great invite for a couple of week's time to spend the day ferreting with the dogs, then a bit of grub and back out after dark with the dogs and gun. Trouble is my dog has never seen ferrets, so is there any way to avoid the awkward moment my dog kills my mate's ferrets? That is a light-hearted question by the way, but one that would be handy to know the answer to. Cheers. Quote Link to post
bunnyboiler 1,053
Keep him on a slip away from the burrows if his recal is spot on you shouldn't have any problems ? 1 Quote Link to post

Moja 111
I wouldn't take a dog then, go and a have a good few days away BUT I honestly wouldn't take a dog ferreting that wasn't broke to them. Never mind slip leads shit will hit the fan at some point. 4 Quote Link to post
walshie 2,804
It's only a day. In a couple of week's time. Quote Link to post
neil b 2,353
If I wasn't 100%sure about my dog I wouldnt let it near someone else's ferrets, on the same note I wouldn't work my ferrets with someone else's dog. It can spoil a good friendship and day out if a disaster happens 1 Quote Link to post
walshie 2,804
Break the dog to em over next few weeks, simple to do, and both you will benefit out it That's a good idea. Trouble is he lives miles away. I think i know someone round here that has them. Failing that, just take the dog out after dark instead. Quote Link to post
Blackbriar 8,569
My lurcher took to the ferrets really quickly, but one of the terriers learnt the hard way ! Quote Link to post
walshie 2,804
I don't think my dog could handle a ferret single handed anyway. Quote Link to post

bobza 910
i took a lad off here for a day out with his whippet bolting rabbits with the ferrits his dog was the same very keen ,i put my 8 year old ferrit in the set and soon as the action started and the dog got abit keen my jill showed her head the whippet took a strike at her ,i knew this was going to happen and should of been guarding the set better ,there was no way was i going to spoil his day or disheart him with his dog ,instead we put the dog on a slip to watch what was going on ,dogs aren't daft and soon cotton on to what the ferrits for ,when we got home we sorted out a few ferrits that someone local was selling ,he took the home and kept them in his garden ,few week later we headed back up the hills no slips ,dropped 3 ferrits into a set on a hillside sat back and let the dogs work ,within 3 week his dog was a changed dog and worked like it was a pro ,catching bolted rabbits on steep hillsides then bringing them straight back and watching for the next bolt ,never once looked at the ferrit ,if your mates, no ferrit will stop you staying mates , if your taking your dog do keep it on a slip wait till the rabbit bolts before slipping and guard the set like a hawk ,if your pals good with ferriting he will keep a close eye on his ferrit and not let your dog to close till hes sure its ok ,small open sets are a good start 5 6 holers were yous can keep a good eye on every hole ,do take your dog even if its on the lead watching coz it wont learn nothing sitting back home atb and have a good day ,bobza 1 Quote Link to post

terryd 8,551
Guess its down to the temp of the dog. If mine thought some thing was on the menu you would have seconds to intercept him returning from being slipped on a rabbit and more than likely fail so I wouldn't risk. Be no fun working your ferrets either if you think there's a chance they could get the chop any second if it goes pete tong 1 Quote Link to post
