How Does Spearfishing Sit With You All ?

Recommended Posts

I bough one years ago but still havnt used it lol think all the rubber has perished now also.i thought I'd have a go for the bass and pollack around the rocks etc but never got around to it. It sits just fine with me? You can be very picky about what you shoot at.

As long as the fish went for food then no problem. That said, I do have a problem with trophy killing, it does not sit well with me.

agreed, if I was looking at a shoal of bass I wouldn't be shooting at the breeding fish id be shooting at what I needed and could use while it was fresh. im not into getting that trophy, fish that get to trophy size deserve to carry on and pass on the genes. take what you need and have some respect ( and self control)

its probably worth mentioning that if spearfishing in the uk it can only be done on a single breath, no scuba gear is allowed. its not easy to get to the depths needed, line up and take a shot, on a single breath, theres a lot more to it than people think.

also uk waters are bloody cold! hence why mines still hung up in the garage lol

It's illegal to spear fish around Irish waters if you're using an artificial breathing aid. In other words a snorkel is the most you can use.

My brother used to do it (also of Thailand) and I asked him why a scuba tank can't be used and he said because it's already too easy.

where does the for food line get drawn , the trophy hunters will always say its for food , it most prob is but not theirs , a local will harvest an area for food with spear , few years back i was lucky to snorkel some pristine reefs , amazing dosnt come close to it the fish the colours the marine life etc , we even caught a few fish with rod n line and replaced all except for a couple for the pot small snappers and a trigger, every year i went this reef it remained pristine , one year i made the journey to the main island to fish , askd the usual local to take me out to the reef , he shook his head"no point man " i had to go so we went out , over the side and the reef hadnt gone but the grouper the lobster snapper triggers of all sizes were gone , app a boat of yank spearers had dropped in and cleaned it up for food like , the islanders were a bit touchy about outsiders taking their stock and now make a point of seeing off any spearers , i know its only my view but wether its wrong or right or the just for food angle having taking a few for the pot im not sure i can have the trophy fish be it big pike marlin speared and be ok with it , i mean if they were number hunters the eco system on a reef soon fkd , i know 1st hand that monster grouper hogfish in fact plenty of fish behave diff when man under water and many will swim up to look ya , prob why hogfish and grouper get protection , me i couldnt send a bolt into a big ol grouper that came over to me to check me out , and bolting a marlin no way jose but hey it takes allsorts
