neil cooney 10,416
Of course there'll be resistance FD, there'll be those of us who keep them right, and those who don't. But it will happen. 2 Quote Link to post
stop.end 4,079
The black dog or patterdale as we know it today has a history no longer than 40 years if we are going to be realsistic... money was never parted in NI in the correct circles, respect out weighs that a million times! when bred right from the start and reared and worked right there good. If the fellas who then get them pups gifted through respect then they rear them right and work them right then folk they know whos worthy get stuff free too and the circle turns... But sadly the coin can dents many a man...so some times the dents in the circle needs to be hammered out! Im very confident that there is enough good men with the proper mindset with the right good stuff to keep the wheels turning.... But to think there is no white terriers or there doing there trade correctly with a LOT more history behind them is a complete wind up. lol 8 Quote Link to post

I mean personally. Genuine question. Also, another question, IF money was NEVER parted in NI in the correct circles and the fact that you've bought and sold loads of terriers does that mean you've never traveled in those circles ? Fair play for admitting that. Perhaps some day those circles will let you in. Edited December 20, 2016 by neil cooney 2 Quote Link to post

neil cooney 10,416
I think Dytcos has a point, I was thinking the same thing, but I think the name patterdale has to be a more fitting name for black dogs rough, smooth or (chocolate) , would I class nuttalls or goulds as black fells, no. Would they? Maybe a while back when they were not as popular as today the name black fell applied, but as time change and they became more popular its inevitable the name patterdale would be used more often, I would call parks and middletons dogs fell terriers, but everyone has a different view I suppose, whats in a name!!! I just call mine a worker haha Apache, If another terrierman was to ask me what type I keep I would answer "black ones", simple as that. If they're a terrier man they'll catch my drift. BUT, just out of interest where does the name "PATTERDALE" come from regarding terriers ? I ask because I don't know and because as far as I know it's a small village in Cumbria. So how does the small village of Cumbria give it's name to the most common type of working terrier worldwide ? Quote Link to post
Apache... 2,588
Your guess is as good as mine unless you know something I dont, but I bet you theres a hundred people with a hundred different stories to why it is???? 1 Quote Link to post
Apache... 2,588
A long time ago maybe in a boozer somewhere someone suggests Lonsdale no, eskdale no, ennerdale no, allerdale no, matterdale!!!! no, definately not Emmerdale, now Patterdale that sounds more like it, maybe!!!! 6 Quote Link to post
timmy k 591
I agree with you their cooney, but would never generalise on a colour. People off the street often come over and ask "are they patterdales" "No, their terriers" "What type" "Digging ones" I get a few funny looks but if they don't know what I'm on about f**k em! 4 Quote Link to post

Glyn..... 5,208
When I started off, 40 years back lol there were lakeys mostly b and t but also red and grizzle, russells, borders and crossbreds. These were often very much like todays Patterdales, including chocolates Fells was a name brought in for Lakeys to include those that werent b and t. What people nowadays term Patterdales are what has evolved from these crossbred dogs over the last few decades imo. Cheers, D. i can trace mine back abit further than that i've had terriers all related to each other for the last 33 year they in turn came mainly from BN kennel with a outcross or two most of which where bred down from the Breay/Buck line i'm not going for KC yet , but some lines can be traced back for about a 100 years 6 Quote Link to post
