+1 for a beddy/whippet cracking little dogs and lots of fun. My opinions only based on the one mate has, his Mrs got it as a family pet and it's great with the kid and in the house. But it also comes out ferreting and lamping and really does give 110%! Even tho its from show parents! It maybe a one off but if he ever had to get rid, I would rio his hand ioff

I agree though, a lurcher pup with a shit load of Bedlington would/should be the very ticket. Though i wouldn't have one with only Whippet in it, you'd get more from a Beddy greyhound, or beddy whippet/greyhound. You'd want a dog of average size to be more versitile in my opinion. And as been said, look to something lurcher to lurcher bred rather than a first cross.

Just remember, whatever you choose its gonna be a million miles away from your usual dogs. Hope you find what you seek.

Have experience with sighthounds, have had a couple of ex racers and used to foster for SLR but never worked them. I like the thought of beddy in there purely for the coat resilience. have been told to avoid anything saluki. My mate is covering his

1/4 saluki 3/4 whippet with a collie/whippet/bull. Wanted to avoid bull cross (personal preference) but should be fairly diluted with this mix. he was toying with covering her with his beddy whippet. I trust his opinion and would probably opt for anything he bred as he breeds to work them.

Whip/Grey/Bedlington mate. I have got this mix on my 3 year old bitch.

 

She is very very easy and responsive and never uptight or complicated. A bit hard mouthed but retrieves live to hand. Clears 5 bar gates. Walks to heal. Excellent recall. Won't sit (but many Lurchers don't because it is uncomfortable for a slight dog to sit on hard ground).

 

Pre ban hare fox not a problem (day and night).

 

Tough as nails too. I love this mix and will definitely be sticking with it moving forward

Pure Whippet also s lot of fun. You can train these like a gun dog and they will take to it like a duck to water. Excellent nose in them too.

You get a whippet you be wanting a bigger all round dog next year...most lurchers are laid back dogs as they are if raised right..get something what can take the game you intend to take n and what you may want to take in years to come as you both grow in to the game..

I agree mate but I don't the space for a big pooch, my greyhounds were awesome dogs but with tail being at coffee table height with a house full of kids is asking for trouble. Around spanner height, bit taller, will be awesome.

Don't have anything against bull just thought with a smaller dog prob best not to have anything in it to beef it up. Don't need the extra grit it brings for rabbits.

I would go with a straight whippet, beddy whippets and the like usually have great drive and are not skittish but they can be a bit deaf when on a drag and a bit headstrong, if you can handle that great, they do settle in time, well mine have anyway, i have a collie x now totally different temperament, not for the inexperienced i think, i would just go with a pure whippet off decent stuff for a first dog, fast enough, should have decent nose and drive if off right stuff and a lot more biddable on the whole than beddy x, well just my opinion anyway.
