My Mink And Lurcher Getting A Muskrat

Here's a video of my pointer lurcher Onsa using her nose to locate a hidden muskrat, and then my mink Fang capturing that muskrat.....

So is the dog! They really are a great team! With just the mink I would have had quite a difficult time finding a single muskrat hiding in that marsh. But with the lurcher there to help, we could quickly sweep through the marsh, and find the one muskrat hiding in that big area, then release the mink right in the area where the muskrat or brown rat is hiding. Without the mink, the dog could only catch rats or muskrats that were out side of their holes. But with the team working together we can catch a lot more game, and in a lot more difficult circumstances. And don't think the dog doesn't catch stuff on her own. She's caught plenty of game both with and without the mink's help. She's caught a rabbit, several muskrats, and a bunch of brown rats so far, and she's only 9 months old.

Yeah, I've taught the lurcher to stand back and let the mink do its job unless I say otherwise. Rushing in while the mink is on a kill is not beneficial, and can potentially cause problems. It's not a good idea to distract a mink while it is wrestling with biting prey. Something like a rabbit or goose would be fine, as the mink can't be bitten by them. But if you distract a mink on a squirrel or muskrat, you greatly increase the chance of an accident that otherwise would have never happened. Mink are VERY GOOD at taking down biting prey on their own, and I've found that trying to "help" is often far more detrimental than just staying out of the way. There are occasions where that is not the case, and the dog will happily jump in and help on command. She's killed a couple different rats that the mink had by the tail, while she crunched their head to prevent their possible escape. She's also helped to run down fast running prey like rabbits, that the mink has little to no chance of running down in the open. But she knows to wait for my word to jump in, if the mink is in the middle of it. But if a rat, muskrat, rabbit, etc. were to flush with no mink in sight, you better believe she's going to nail that sucker in the blink of an eye!
