walshie 2,804
Not sure what it is with my dog, but he loves eating squirrels. Anything else he just drops, but not squizzers. He's caught a few lately by accident as we are walking up the road and instead of dropping them, he runs off a bit and eats them. He stays well out of reach until he's finished, when his recall is pretty good at other times. Why? And how should i go about stopping it? Ta. Quote Link to post

Maximus Ferret 2,063
My dogs love them So do I !!! One time I was sat in a builders hut near Horncastle, Lincs. when the conversation turned to what sandwitches we had, "mine are only jam", I've got cheese and pickle", "Oh I've got squirrel". They didn't believe me at first but no-one tried a taste. It was roasted, leftover from dinner the night before. Roasted hard for a short time with plenty of fat it's ok. Quite savory really. Tozer 385
I I take my dogs out to the woods and spend hours chasing squirrels. They come home knackered. I have no idea why your dog eats them, but I do think they taste a lot nicer than rabbit 1 Quote Link to post

I have no idea why your dog eats them, but I do think they taste a lot nicer than rabbit They certainly have more flavor but after more than 50 years of eating rabbit I have to say I still enjoy it, pie, stew or burgers etc. Wish my wife and kids felt the same . They're fine with deer, goat or pheasant but won't even consider rabbit anymore (or squirrel) . 1 Quote Link to post
johnny boy68 11,726
My old bitch used to eat squirrels and if she ever caught a fluff ball rabbit that would be gobbled down too. Suppose it's like us munching on a mars when we're out and about LOL 2 Quote Link to post
my hounds 307
I know a bloke who eats the meat cooked and wrapped in bacon or gives to his dog,fur the job lot. Quote Link to post
Neal 1,857
My kelpies catch more squirrels than rabbits nowadays but they often seem to need a bit of encouragement to eat them...not sure why. I've never eaten one as I gather you need a fair few to make a single burger and I only ever catch them singly (usually when they're burying their nuts!) but I'm sure I read Hugh F-W say he prefers the taste to rabbit. I also overheard a conversation in which one old boy in Chagford was extolling the virtues of squirrel meat. In my case Walshie it's pigeons...that's the only thing I can't get Scout to retrieve...she sneaks off and won't come back until she's finished the lot and waddles like a pug. 1 Quote Link to post
