Eating Squirrels

Recommended Posts

Not sure what it is with my dog, but he loves eating squirrels.

Anything else he just drops, but not squizzers. He's caught a few lately by accident as we are walking up the road and instead of dropping them, he runs off a bit and eats them. He stays well out of reach until he's finished, when his recall is pretty good at other times.

Why? And how should i go about stopping it?

My dogs love them

So do I !!!

One time I was sat in a builders hut near Horncastle, Lincs. when the conversation turned to what sandwitches we had, "mine are only jam", I've got cheese and pickle", "Oh I've got squirrel". They didn't believe me at first but no-one tried a taste. It was roasted, leftover from dinner the night before. Roasted hard for a short time with plenty of fat it's ok. Quite savory really.

I I take my dogs out to the woods and spend hours chasing squirrels. They come home knackered.

I have no idea why your dog eats them, but I do think they taste a lot nicer than rabbit

They certainly have more flavor but after more than 50 years of eating rabbit I have to say I still enjoy it, pie, stew or burgers etc. Wish my wife and kids felt the same :( . They're fine with deer, goat or pheasant but won't even consider rabbit anymore (or squirrel) .

My kelpies catch more squirrels than rabbits nowadays but they often seem to need a bit of encouragement to eat them...not sure why.

I've never eaten one as I gather you need a fair few to make a single burger and I only ever catch them singly (usually when they're burying their nuts!) but I'm sure I read Hugh F-W say he prefers the taste to rabbit. I also overheard a conversation in which one old boy in Chagford was extolling the virtues of squirrel meat.

In my case Walshie it's pigeons...that's the only thing I can't get Scout to retrieve...she sneaks off and won't come back until she's finished the lot and waddles like a pug.

I've got one here that will down rats and mice like a python, dosnt even chew em......

The rats occasionally end up being regurgitated on the kitchen floor a few hours later......the Mrs ain't usually too pleased.
