Aussie Whip 4,127
Wondering if anyone works this cross, how do they rate them and wondering if they are an improvement on a pure whippet for ferreting, lamping. Quote Link to post
The shireman 61
In my eyes mate the only thing a jack Russell would add is more fire, maybe a better nose and the ability to work cover more efficiently, but then you've got the cons. I.e, that coat isn't gona fair to well crashing around in thorn bushes, the possibility of hunting up while on the lamp, the loss of pace. Personally I'd stick with a whippet mate. neems 2,406
Never seen a russel x,but if I wanted a terrier x I'd look for a leggy terrier bedlingtons being the obvious one. Quote Link to post
stevemac 442
A cross that is used here in Australia by fellas that hunt fox in places with a lot of cover like black berry. they will drive fox to the running dogs and are quick enough to catch in cover and handle the fox if they do. A nice leggy jackrussell / foxterrier is usually the dog of choise to cross to the whippet. 1 Quote Link to post
TOMO 26,458
if its for ferreting rabbits,,and lamping rabbits,,maybe the od hare,,,,then get a fast lurcher,,if theres more bushing involved then maybe the russel cross would be better... but you boys out there have easy access to a great breed for rabbit catching lurchers,,,namely the kelpie,, kelpie greyound crossed back to a whippet xgreyhound... heres one i prepaired earlier 9 Quote Link to post
TOMO 26,458
a good night lamping rabbits with the kelpie cross Edited December 2, 2016 by TOMO 11 Quote Link to post
Sirblessed 2,511
a good night lamping rabbits with the kelpie cross The kelpie is a good dog mate, use the nose a bit too much for me for what I do these days, used them crossed with a number of breeds for nose dogs that could take the heat. I prefer sighthound x sighthound for what I do. That is a class looking animal though Quote Link to post

Tyla 3,179
I own the dog Wales123 is talking about. He's half x and coming up 10 year old. I'm on my phone now so no pics but are lots on my old posts from years ago. He's been a bloody good dog, I wish I could clone him. Quote Link to post
Shaddy93 840
Personally if I was going to get a whippet x terrier I'd aim towards a beddy whippet a well bred one will tackle just anything too I can't comment on a Russell x whippet as I don't know of any but I could imagine they could be tappers but like I said I have no experience with this cross Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
A little off the subject here as I've no personal experience of the cross but I'm pretty sure Jack Hargrieves did a program on "Coney Dogs" years ago and one was a JRT X Whippet and it could fairly whip up bolted rabbits. Anyone remember it ? Quote Link to post

neil cooney 10,416
It was the first time I ever seen small lurchers work on telly or in the flesh. I must have been only 15 or 16 at the time. So was I right Phil, was it a Jack Russell cross ? Quote Link to post
