Nik_B 3,790
I agree and I don't say everything I think in front of other people, partly why I do not use facebook in the same way other people do. I have anonymous accounts for trolling and activism and only a few small number of people see my posts My twitter is even worse lol. I have seen people making political statements on LinkedIn which is unbelievably stupid as that is a professional social networking site. Having said that Bristow wasn't on TV (as far as I know) when he made those dumb comments, it was on twitter maybe when he was in the pub or at home? Twitter is a dangerous place for dumb celebs to inhabit, a few too many beers one evening and you've had it. I'd prefer people would stop being outraged at every single silly comment people make.
Born Hunter 17,784
What's free speech got to do with it? Sky is a private company and it's up to them who they want to represent their brand. Because once people seed they can lose their jobs just by voicing an opinion they will start to toe the line....partly explains why our media never seems to question anything anymore. I much prefer argument and debate to censorship A free Press means not regulating and restricting their actions. It does not mean regulating them from managing their staff how they see fit. I would consider that the complete opposite of freedom. Having a free Press and freedom of speech does not stop lies and deceit, it simply maintains the diversity (through freedom) of the voices and therefore lets the masses decide. We live in a world where a simple comment can lose jobs and wreck lives. Look at Nobel laureate Tim Hunt's self deprecating joke that led to him being removed from his post...never mind that the work he did helped cure cancer. Bristow isn't a journalist he's a regular bloke....regular blokes say daft things all the time. But that isn't an infringement of a classical liberal freedom, it's the fundamental vice of freedom! The fact that with freedom comes the freedom for people to push an agenda that may or may not be true, false or whatever. The virtue of it on the other hand is that if the masses want to find the truth then it will be out there. The problem is that the masses blindly put their faith in a select few big players without holding them accountable socially, therefore giving them the privilege of being able to push their own agendas and sack people for saying things that may or may not be considered outrageous and sackable by the masses. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with your point, just pointing out that if you think his dismissal was unfair then it's not because of a violation of the classical liberties we hold dear, it's a result of a socially negligent society. Nik_B 3,790
Don't know what pub yous drink in but if folk started actin the big yin making a fool of abuse victims where I come from they'd get slapped. I think his comments were moronic, he should have apologised and that should have been enough, I bet he regretted what he said the next day. All I'm saying is we are living in times where every time someone says something idiotic the internet mobs want to burn people at the stake.

Rake aboot 4,936
He was an employee of Sky and his contract would state that he has a duty not to bring Sky into disrepute. He did that when he made utterly idiotic remarks on twitter. He should have known better. He is entitled to his opinion but not to break the terms of his employment contract. Malt 379
It was a daft statement to make in the public domain while he was in his position with a major broadcaster after what's happened at the BBC.. I can't see how anyone can say the outcome should have been any different..
