mine eat quite a lot of trout and squirels they love em

just wondering would it be alright to feed ferrets the odd fish now and then.just wondering whats your veiws are ? how often etc etc ? or can they just about eat any thing raw. mines are feed on a diet of rabbit,duck, wood pigeon.

I feed mine sardines in oil, and seafood sticks, this is only for treats mind, not their main food. They love it all, are fit as fiddles and look great.

I get some salmon heads each week for the dogs from the local fish monger. One week he gave me a load of shark and both the dogs and the ferrets loved it.

when fishing you sometimes get a fish belly up in the net after a session and these are fed to the ferrets .Have fed cat,owl, fox ,crow ,rat and of course all the game .

I saw a dead cat on the road once, had been knocked rather than squashed, was going to feed it to my ferrets but I thought if any of my neighbours saw its head lying on the hutch floor it would be tricky to explain!

 

In answer to the original question, in one of my books, which name escapes me but its by val porter and someone brown I think... It has a section on polecats diet in the wild, and they get through a bit of fish In the form of eels mostly I believe, but it still fish.

 

And my mate feeds his ferrets fish occasionally, apparently they love them

i am lucky to have a weekly supply of salmon heads which i fed raw to ferrets and boil them down for the dogs , i have seen a very marked improvement on the dogs coats by feeding this at least twice weekly

Has anybody ever thought about why a ferret has got webbed feet? (or was it just the unrelated pair I had!)

I'd have thought at some point in their evolution they must been at least semi aquatic. I've never seen or read anything about it though.

Must admit i have never come across or heard of anyone having a ferret with webbed feet before, so maybe it was just a birth defect or summat

have a close look between the toes, my pair were unrelated, and they both had them. It's not webbed like a duck though! My god, is my ferret a freak!

 

Edited to say:

I've just checked again, the first time I noticed it was when they were kits, they don't seem to be as pronounced now, maybe it was just some loose skin that they hadn't grown into! as Del boy said "what a plonker!"

my ferts wont eat pollack or whiting they do however loce roach,rudd trout,eel etc.afterall it is a natural food for them!

In one of the books i have by Dave Bezzant he lets his swim in calm rivers/ponds in the summer he shows 1 or 2 photos in his book.Ocassionally when i did bath my lot in the summer months they did,nt seem to keen to swim just clawed frantically to get out & be dried...should think they will be good swimmers when need be not something i think they would do by choice tho..

Mine go swimming if you have never seen it its wort it they fold ther legs back and swim like croc's as for feeding fish mine have had prawns and sprats and liked them both
