low plains drifter 10,475
Horses are easily spooked and will go through a fence very easy to get away Or come after you and your dog, biting and kicking. Lol I've had a couple of close scrapes like that at night . f**k knows why I've put a laughing face up, it was anything but funny at the time . It was many years ago, only took me the second time to fully comprehend what could easily have happened if I hadn't have dived over a railway embankment fence into some thick cover, (complete with lamp, battery etc) wich I lost in the same cover, with horse only a few yards behind me as I went over the fence, and the c**t was trotting back and forth actively looking for me! Lol. From that night on I have NEVER lamped land with horses in the near vicinity, as they can and do appear out of seemingly nowhere.Only horses I've seen totally ok with dogs are horses that belonging to hunts, but that's only been in the daytime. Could, and probably would be different at night No need for heroics, the offer of a carrot would have sufficed Quote Link to post

Somewhereyournot 1,117
Iv had too many incidents with cows and horses to never bother lamping fields with them in again. I dont even bother lamping fields with sheep in either. I find the sheep get spooked that the spook the stuff in the field. Been charged many a time by horses and cows. Otherday I was on permission shooting walking around the field with calf's n cattle in, opposite side of the fence amd they started going absolutely mental busting through three strand fence into woodland and trying to find a way into my field. I made a sharp exit and let farmer know about them breaking the fence. Luckily he had saw what happend. Quote Link to post

Chaff 3,619
You could just ferret it during the day most stables we ferret the horses keep their distance, or they really friendly. However there is the odd one that just don't like dogs, had a situation when entered field about 10 acre got half way across then noticed as few horses and one charging round fence line, so put dog on lead. Horse came straight over to me and dog horse was fine with me but hated dog so it took a long half hour to walk out of field horse running circling us to get at dog. Atb Quote Link to post
