Popular Post trigger2 3,197
decided to have me another little trip out with my pup again tonight to a little spot that holds a rabbit or two. i work my dogs off the slip and just recently ive been taking the pup ferreting and letting him hunt up. the first 3 fields were a nightmare tonight as he just put his nose down and worked the field so we hardly got a run, once he had blew a little steam off i finally spotted a pair of rabbits squat in the corner of the field, so i walk up and get myself into the best position i can light on pups off down the beam gets right on the rabbit before it moves and picks it up within 15 yards.brings it back to me. i take it off him and dispatch it light back on second rabbit still sat there so off the pup goes down the beam this rabbit is a little more tricky but a couple of turns later in the bag. i gut the rabbits just to give the pup a little breather then put the lamp on and another rabbit is sat out so off he goes again rabbit number 3 in the bag. nice start i am thinking and head off on the rest of the walk. the pup gets a little excited and works most the fields tonight, that will soon be worked out of him so its not a problem just a little annoying but hes 8 months and still learning the game. he had a lovely squatter down the beam about 70yds away so i drop to my one knee as usual just flicking the lamp on the floor once or twice so he knows where to head back to me. just as he gets about 10 yards away with his retrieve a bloody rabbit jumps up out of the squat between me and him so the pup drops his rabbit and catches the the one thats just jumped up. i give chase to the one hes dropped but it makes to the hedge and down a hole before i can get near it. a nice steady walk resulting in 12 in the bag and one thats escaped 12 out of the 13 is respectable enough for a young dog i am happy with that. thanks for looking 25 Quote Link to post

A.T.B cheers mate. when i say 12 out of the 13 i ment he caught 13 rabbits in total and there is just 12 in the bag as he dropped one and it made its escape. 12 out of 13 runs would be some going ive never had a dog do that round here. 1 Quote Link to post
bird 10,013
good going the pup , the more lamping it does , than ferreting , it will stop hunting up, and lamping your game ,, its already using beam and catching it will soon stop using its nose at night,Buck the same for 5-10 mins mad lol , but soon settles down to the job . 1 Quote Link to post
