walshie 2,804
Can you hire detectors? I quite fancy a go, but I don't fancy buying one then having it languish in the garage for years.

mackem 26,564
Eric Lawes, old guy who died last year, the legend goes he was going into town to get some golf clubs as he was on the very of retiring and wanted a hobby to keep himself occupied,he saw a mate of his with a metal detector so after a chat and a demo he thought f**k the golf, its the ruination of a good walk,as mark twain said,so he bought a machine, first time out a farmer asked him to search a field for a hammer that had fallen off his tractor, the hammer is in the british museum........as is most of the estimated 10 million pound treasure he found while looking for it.

mackem 26,564
Why is a hammer that fell off a tractor in the museum? Because its in context with the finding of the hoard, its provenance for the story.
