air gun ant 1,666
there was a little farm pond on some rough ground near where I grew up, and I used to catch them with a bit of bamboo cane, with some wool tied to it and a worm tied on to that. there was big plans for new housing estate on that land but when somebody saw me and asked what I was doing, I showed them. its a nice little nature reserve now with little pontoons etc and is used by the local primary school for teaching the kids now.
Waz 4,274
Used to see these all the time as kids 35 year ago or thereabouts, had em in the garden pond and they were a common site. What went wrong for them?

Neal 1,874
I found one on my permission earlier this year in a hedgerow that's due to have a housing estate on either side! I took a photo as evidence so maybe I can use it to halt the work...I doubt it though...not in the south east commuter belt!

Logically speaking their presence in the south east shouldn't halt construction of anything. The legislation governing Gcn is European... They are rare on the continent but I would suggest that most suitable habitat in the south East, Midlands, and North of England will have them.

Oh well, never mind, I was just pleased to see one as we mainly get palmates around here. The farmer has put a new wildlife pond in a couple of fields away so maybe the male I saw will make it to that pond instead of the temporary pond near where I found him...or I could transport some of the spawn over. That would be illegal.

Then you can do what you like.
