Lutra Lutra 611
Hello to all members, Apologies for my somewhat long hiatus regarding posting anything that may be of interest to certain readers. After perusing certain books and magazines a short while back, I thought this post may be of some interest to the good terrier lads on this forum. A certain magazine published in the year of (1958) caught my attention regarding the advertising of certain litters of terrier pups for sale. We all know how times have changed, unfortunately not for the better! However, one has to make do with what one has in the way times are today. The first advertisement reads: JACK RUSSELL TERRIERS, small and low, keen ratters and rabbiters, fox and badger; several at stud; puppies for sale; as exported.-Miss Sixton Breach Farm Kennels, Charlton Adam, Somerton, Som TEL Charlton Mackeral S.A.E. Advertisement number 2: genuine smooth working terrier puppies, (5 guineas); white|tan markings on head; narrow,, small; dead game Guaranteed - Smith, Gmekeeper, Winkburn, Newark, Notts. Advertisement Number 3: JACK RUSSELL PUPPIES, of the finest breeding possible, parents can be seen at work six days a week. The only kennel in the country containing 5 stud dogs and 25 brood bitches that are all absolutely first class above and below ground.(Satisfied customers are my best advert) Rough, smooth and broken coats-Bert Gripton, Hunt Terrier man, Blymhill, Shifnal, Salop. Hoping this little snippet offers some readers much pleasure and perhaps there are some older people who can relate to various events of yesteryear. Good luck, Stephen.... 9 Quote Link to post

pablo esc 1,598
Noticed above what lutra , put ,SAE.classic. and someone took the time and correspondence to do it.and as you said above how someone would get back in touch through your address or a parent or friends phone number. When I started following hunting , a full price Russell was 15 ,25 quid. Must been brilliant times , people , up to thirty years beforehand 1 Quote Link to post

jiggy 3,209
To be fair them little yappy Russell's were probably the best dog to use at the time and mute black dogs were of no use until terrier locaters came about which complimented the up and at em dogs. Quote Link to post
eastcoast 4,221
5 guineas would of been a lot of money in 1958. But it was about the time that the working man had a little bit of disposable income if he wanted to improve/take a chance on what would of always been around locally . 2 Quote Link to post
