Young Kids Air Guns?

Recommended Posts

Morning fellas, just thought I'd sneek on the forum while the boss is out!

I'm thinking of starting to take my grandson with me when I go to the indoor range as he's asked a couple of times what it's like. My first plan was to ring the range and ask if they had any rifles we could hire etc.

He's 8 years old and I would say average size for a kid of his age, not short or tall, I'm just wondering what people would suggest as a good starter for him, if he enjoys it? I didn't really know if they made junior guns or how much they would cost? I was thinking about a pistol but with a short barrel you've got to be really aware of where the weapon is pointing all the time!

Any idea's please?

Please remember I'm new to this so keep your replies as simple as possible, I do realise I've opened the door for abuse, but hey it's nearly Christmas

This is how it all started for me: Diana model 1 and a Gat air pistol, later graduated to a BSA Cadet. Buying pellets in the local hardware store. Those times are sadly gone for the kids today.

An HW30 is a nice little, well made junior springer. Some places sell them as a kit with a pretty decent little 4x32 Weihrauch scope for less than £200. They'll usually produce around 6-7ftlb depending on calibre.

However, at 8yrs old, he might still struggle with cocking it.

If you want something a lot easier to kick start his interest - my daughters first rifle (when she was 9) was an SMK xs501.

It's a lightweight, bolt action, single shot, Co2 rifle. These are less than £150 (rifle only). But, they can be prone to leaks from the end cap seal where the Co2 bulbs go in.

BSA ULTRA

some of the other springers mentioned will be to heavy for him and to hard to cock but we will take turns loading them for him and as he will be using a bench rest it will be no bother him firing them off .

little hunter was 8 when he started

so its a nice age for the young one to start

but iv a feeling he will fall for the hw100 mind lol

Good point there with the cocking of springers lads! Even an unloaded one is a dangerous bit of kit for a youngster! The thought of a half cocked springer snapping back on them little fingers goes right through me... it really really does!

When my son was his age 40 years ago I bought a Diana break barrel, no idea what model it was but low power and he was able to cock it. Now by today's standard and range of guns available it was not great BUT he had sooooo much pleasure with that little gun, cheap as chips and we used to shoot in the cellar of that house where we built a range, only 30' but pure fun and that to me is how you get a kid started..............................I know, times have changed, oh well that how it worked for us back in the day.

Totally agree Phil! What i got up to with the old fellow's webley hawk back in the seventies while he was at work and the methods I had to use to cock it..I'll not mention.
