was reading a very well know book last night by A well established Terrier author...Not Plummer BTW and in it he states he finds the use of lurchers at digs disheartening as in his opinion is is unsporting unless in the event of controlling the population...I found this very suprising as he seemed to be only interested in hunting old charles with terriers.. do the serious digging lads on here ever use a running / heavy dog for bolting or drawing? If so which type do you prefer and what do you require it to do in a typical days hunting?

Surely a decent lurcher will add to the days bag ...which is what we are all after ....????

It all depends on the dog of course, if it is up to drawing. But the best dogs I've seen personally for drawing was a mates strain of Bull cross, had them out like a cork from a bottle. :D 24"-26" varying from 65lb to 75lb 3/4 Grey to 1/4 Bull (proper Bull). Very quick and effective! B)

Interesting that Hawkeye....I've never been one for draw dogs to be honest and I do run all my dogs together most of the time. The last time I used a draw dog was with that wheaten bitch of mine and that was really to see if she wanted to know more than anything else as she was a touch slow in coming forward if you know what I mean. I showed her the business end of the hole and she got that excited she grabbed the first thing she could get which was the terrier  :11:

not just for drawing...what about working in tandem eg marking hunting cover etc. anyone use a running dog  for that ?

Invaluable tool imho, whether you work terriers of leads or on leads a Lurcher ( a good Lurcher) is a must.

A. If you work terriers on leads and only walk straight to intended work, think of all the work you are missing on the way, chance encounters, new holes etc

B. If you work them with terriers of leads and your terrier finds a new hole one which you didn't know about, how you gonna find it??

Can be a nightmare when, digging for all sorts of reasons, whining is the most annoying. bailing in over the top of you when you're close to breaking through,

as Stabs already said.. over excitement and gripping the first thing they see.

Plus side catching bolters, marking the ground where your terrier is bottling up when locators packed in, letting you know where the intended bolt is going to come from.... Oh yes, something to talk to when all is not going to plan....

The dogs I mentioned earlier will take "all" on the hoof and work wooded cover but when drawing they just sit on top ticking over, waiting for the knock to enter. Nice and steady. I'll ask my bud if he'll let me post some of his pics :D

I always feel alot happier having a lurcher in the team, marking to ground, catching bolters and sometimes pressuring a fox to ground in other words providing sport for the terrier. Its the drawing side most people seem to get agitated about, all I can say is that personaly by the time a draw is attempted the terrier has done his job and the big dog getting the job finnished can save the terrier from undue damage. Here is a pic of Royston2 Bedlington lurcher she pushed one fox to ground and kept a steady mark on it , when we eventualy broke through it was a pleasant suprise to find a nice pair of foxes.

I use a WHP cross, he is invaluable, his only downfall is coursing anything at a distance, he is a gear short, however he will hunt, mark, watch nets and is as obedient as they come, he has also caught numerous foxes that have got out of that hole ya miss netting.

The Pure bred WHP is notorious for being a nasty c**t with game as it is, through our experience the pups that throw to the Pointer out of a cross mating are the gamier ones.

I would just love to see a weaton x around an earth
