Wolfdog91 7,375
Nice to see something different mate ,how do you catch the turtles and how do you cook them.?well these are just slider turtles. Their are some who eat them but mainly what I do is catch them and relocate them. People down here act like their the plague or something. Most of the time I getting them outta people's ponds, not uncommon to see 10-20 in a small pond. It's actually a pretty good way to make a bit of gas money if you charge say $2 per. As for traps I make my slider or "cooter" as some of the older folks call em, traps out of 2X4 fencing wire. I tie a flat net throat in one end and just a bag in the other with a draw string. Theirs shaped kinda like the old timey lobster pots. For snapping turtles I made some larger version out of concrete remesh but haven had much luck snappers yet, think it's the bait lol. I can take some pics if your curious 6 Quote Link to post

Wolfdog91 7,375
Those possum things look like giant rats. Do you shoot them once caught like that? lol that's what everyone says ! But no usually if I catch them in a dog proof theirs little to no damage and I just let en go. I really don't like skinning the thing if I can help it haha ! Now I do know a few old ladies that like to cook them so I try to grin and bear skinning a few for them. From my understanding they don't taste bad at all but umm....... They just don't look good haha ! 3 Quote Link to post
Torquemada 288
What is the point in letting them go? Are they a pest or are you doing it just for fun? Quote Link to post
mad4it 695
Its interesting to read about how other people go about trapping. Quote Link to post
EDDIE B 3,166
Those possum things look like giant rats. Do you shoot them once caught like that? I presume their a non target. For instance, the one in the photo above, is in a coon trap. Quote Link to post

For instance, the one in the photo above, is in a coon trap. basically. Unless I'm targeting them I really have no reason to keep them. They are kinda a pest on the line though. Mainly because they catch them in about every set you make. Good pan tension helps but you manage to catch them regardless some time. Quote Link to post
Torquemada 288
Is it easy to let them go? I wouldn't like to put my hands anywhere near that thing! Quote Link to post
Wolfdog91 7,375
Ever heard he term "playing possum "? That came from these guys. Half the time they act dead and with these dog proofs all you do is compress the spring and their out. I've had to use my catch pole once on possum. Can't say the same for a raccoon lol ! Usually all I do is put my foot next to him so they have someone to bite, pop the trap and usually I'll grab them by the tail ( possum can hold their body weight with their tails so it doesn't hurt them a bit) and just carry them off away from my trap. Not uncommon for them to come back and get caught again. Their not too bright lol ! 1 Quote Link to post
