Yeah mountain lion or cougar, they hunt in the U.S. with tracking hounds mostly often will have a hard dog like a pit bull with the pack aswell.

They will often track for days on end, the hunter i think usualy has a gun though so that when the mountain lion is treed it is shot.

i don't know what a wind up means. but if its sarcastic no. no one i know of uses anything like pit bull or bull type dog on big game . besides boar they try to over power animals that one dog just can't over power and live through it. a dog that knows the rules lives longer not that they won't pull fur they just know when to back up. the pictures are great i just was wondering are there any scent hounds still in use over there or any where for that matter . we do carry guns even on pursuit only hunts just in case. mtn lions aren't that bad to pull dogs off they normaly tree, bear don't always though. any one wants to know any thing else would be glad to reply to the best of my ability about any type of hunting . would also like to hear about your hunts and how they work some guys do use airedale terriers either crassed on hounds or with them

They still use scent hounds here, in the form of beagle for hare hunting, foxhounds for foxes, stags for deer, mink/otter for mink. Although the hunting of all the above mentioned quarry is now banned, hunting with scent hounds here is usualy a formal affair often followed by the more well to do, people dress up in pretty old english clothes and sometimes ride horses with the hounds.

There isn't the exciting/dangerous quarry here like in the states.

My uncle lives in the states he has a few friends that hunt with hounds there.

The u.k. just doesn't have the land mass/wilderness that the U.S. has which makes scent hunting impractial, most of the country is split by roads, railways, houses etc. there just isn't the great wilderness here like in the u.s. where scent hounds can just track for days without running into a road or a housing estate etc.

Yeah our scent hounds are pretty different to some of the U.S. hounds i have seen. I have read some books on hunting big game in the states and how the pack works together each with their different job and how they are bred for working ability etc. some catch dogs, some with good voices etc. (packs work the same here but the quarry doesn't really require a scent hound like big game does in the U.S.) I think hunting with scent hounds in the states would be fun.

My uncle currently lives in kentucky, was in michigan and south carolina before.

I would say that sight hounds are more my sort of dog, like i said before we don't have the space or the quarry for serious tracking so watching fast courses by fast dogs on fast animals is certainly what i enjoy more.

No i wouldn't say the hare or fox was slow, the scent hounds hunt them over several miles usualy, whilst running dogs will course a fox for maybe a couple of minutes at best and a hare course can last anywhere from a minute to as long as 8 minutes all at high speed, i much prefer running dogs, but maybe it is a geographical thing and because of the different quarry we have, you know.

hey hunt what you got. sight hounds don't do well in parts of the us. the country is to rough and broken to really run some thing down . although i was raised in the great plains and hunted coyotes with sight hounds these hunts vary alot since if the coyotes were given to much lead they had a good chance of winning the race. pure grey hounds are fast enough but hurt themselves too much and don't make good kill dogs . the more common dogs were bordercollie , deerhound , wolfhound or foxhound crosses some cattle dogs to. i had never seen a bullcross that i know of, but that might work as a kill dog . i also have never seen a working saluki or borzoi. but they could be out there some where. mostly the dogs are jumped out of the back of trucks on these hunts. but more people in the east are starting to hunt them with foxhounds. also coyotes are not all the same size ,color or temperment i've shot coyotes in the 20 lb range and a few well over 50 lbs
