snoopdog 1,256
i went out coursing at the crack of dawn this morning with a couple of lads and the dogs to somewhere i haven't been before and my dog had the only course of the day and he ran about 3 or 4 fields up and it was a long and a testing run for the dog. when i finally caught up with him i see that his paws were all bloody but he was walking fine so thought nothing of it, the blood due to the flint in the ground ripping the poor dogs paws to peices.when i got home i saw he couldn't put weight on his front right paw so i checked it over and he has gashes to the top bottom and side of his paw and it is now worrying as i will not be able to run him for 1 or maybe 2 weeks. if you come home with your dog what would you do and how long till you ran him again? lc its a difficult one to answer ..you have seen the cut not us mate ...if it was my dog i would be able to make the decsion ....wether i can sort it myself or if it needs a vet ...then i would be able to make the decsion how long to lay it off for by keeping an eye on the healing process ... ....if your not sure then to vets with it young man ..thats the best addvice i can give .........all the best with it hope heals soon for yer .............snoop dad just gave him a walk hes still limping but i dont think its too bad just think ill need to rest him till it hills but i need to keep him fit as im not able to run him for a week or two as it could make things worse cheers snoop if the dogs fit now it wont take much to get him back to fittness with a couple off weeks lay of what i would do is cover it when your walking him on the lead then take the covering off when hes back in the kennel or where ever you keep it ...there people on this site with alot more medical exspearence then me ...but thats what i would do ..a clean sock with a plastic bag over it then take it of when your back fom the walk ......so it gets fresh air to it ...the best healing prosses there is ...fresh air to a cut ... Guest joe ox
Snoopdog, some dogs seem to suffer from sore quicks more than others I do wash my dogs feet when they have been ran plus dry them off and put sudocrem on the quicks if they look sore. I was just wondering what other peoples methods were, I will give cornucrescine a go Someone did put a excellent write up on this forum a while back on how to tape up a dogs quicks if there constantly getting sore but I cannot find it or remember who wrote it, I would like to read it again. Lurcherchavvy give your dog some rest and he/she should probably be fully healed within 2 weeks. Getting back to fittness after this short lay should not be a problem Quote Link to post
Royston2 0
When i was doing alot of coursing with my brindle bitch she never suffered with this and i am sure it was because from a pup she walked these fields then hunted up on them coursed on them lamped on them it was like she became ammune often people would come down for a jog and 9 times out of 10 there dogs would end up lame where as mine wouldnt be showing no signs suppose thats 1 bonus living in a flint rich area.... poacher9991 10
I ALWAYS GIVE MY DOG A COUPLE OF WEEKS OF RUNNING BIT IN THAT TWO WEEKS THEY STILL GET THERE NORMAL WALK Quote Link to post
kris 0
I had a lurcher dog that split his big pad right through to the bone, he didnt jack on the course and still killed his hare but it took two months to properly heal it was murder as it was mid december and he was my only dog at the time. I made the mistake of taking him out for a run up the park but he just split it open again and again so he had three weeks solid rest. I find the way to harden the pads up is to give them plenty of road work if the roads are salty then even better if they werent then i used to put a high concentration of salt on them after each run, I used to have to give him 6 miles a night just to stop him whining he was fit though. Although this was his downfall he was ok with trotting on the roads behind my car as was not affraid but he got out one night and was hit by some prick speeding down the road he died late of his injurys, so be carefull Quote Link to post
