DIDO.1 22,838
Thrill of the hunt is a reason. But if quarry numbers are down hunt something else. And that's why they banned foxhuntingNo I think we didn't explain our love and thrill at hunting....we automatically reply to any argument with 'pest control'....nobody except a professional pest controller being paid for it, goes out to do pest control. No body spend thousands on rifles to do a farmer a favour...or keep a horse....or a lurcher! We hunt because we love hunting and its an instinct. When we don't explain that, embarrassed about that even then our opponents can mis quote that as 'for fun' Edited October 31, 2016 by DIDO.1

gamerooster 1,179
Well I guess that if this is the current state of affairs that we kill just because we can, it won't be long before its all banned, it's the reason I got sick of hare coursing, the very animal we needed for the sport was tossed into a ditch and left to rot, funnily enough those who kill for killings sake are usually the first ones to complain that there's a lack of game around..... I wonder why?

Tiercel 6,986
I have always hunted for the pot. That is not to say I would not do pest control of non edible species when the chance arose. My main motivation was providing by hunting, I suspect that a lot of people would say the same. Hunting just to kill something has never been my bag so to speak, I am not condemning it, just saying what my motivation always will be. Of course pest control does come in to it, but being candid that is not a motive for me, never has been and never will be. If I think that I have reduced the numbers enough in an area thats it, breaks on till next year. Nine times out of 10 the land is being worked by others as well as yourself so it pays to give yourself a bigger margin of error for the amount of game left. I will never understand the kill everything you can mentality, because it is basically self defeating. Despite mixie some of the land I hunted held rabbits for over thirty years and longer in some cases. By managing the numbers I took of any piece of land there was always something to go at. TBH with the coming of VHD all that has changed here, places where I had long netted for over 30 years no longer hold rabbits, vast tracts of land basically bare of rabbits and what little are there need to be left to try and increase their numbers, if it means I have to stop hunting them to give them a little edge on recovery then so be it. The one 8,479
I only kill what i can use but i usually get round my permissions 3/4 times a year and see ferreting the rabbits as a crop and take enough to feed the ferrets over the summer and keep the landowners happy and problems i can thin them out over the summer snaring , trapping or lamping . but the last couple of years taking a crop of rabbits off anywhere seems to have totally cleaned them out and you are left seeking new permission .But this year the old rabbit seems to be making a come back so time will tell
gnipper 6,475
It's fecked in loads of places and the last thing they need is people going at them with all methods trying to catch the last few survivors.

That's just common sense mate, but unfortunately it ain't all that common these days, surely people would realise if they had a brain there's a reason why the population has died down, and until that's sorted there never will be any rabbits in huge numbers

Silversnake 1,099
Hardly any rabbits around where I hunt due to colisi virus, but I have shot more than I need in the past for pest control before colisi. I am not one who loves the kill but I definitely love the chase and I love the chase more when it is a successful chase. Does this mean I am a sadistic killer? If so, so be it...
