The Porno Chops 97

Recommended Posts

This .177 HW97kt represents the other off half of the deal for my HW100.

I love my .22 TX but, I also wanted to have a .177 springer in the set and this fit the bill perfectly.

I expected this to be a little more harsh than my TX but, it felt very harsh. Each time I fired it, it felt like it was trying to knock my teeth out.

I got talking to Davy about it at the club one day. He said to take it round to the man cave one evening and he'd have a look at it.

Now, this Man Cave is actually Davys secret lair, hidden away in an unassuming part of Swindon. It's full off tools and all manner of airgun goodness ;)

Davy stripped down my 97 (something I tried to do but, I couldn't get the back of the cylinder off), completely degreased, cleaned and polished everything.

He found a steel washer in front of the spring and told me that it was very likely a contributor to the harshness - this was replaced with a plastic washer.

The correct greases and lubricants were applied and, the 97 was reassembled.

We cocked and fired the rifle a few times - it was a lot quieter and smoother to use.

It still had springer recoil but, I no longer felt like I was being assaulted every time I used it.

I'm not someone that wants a springer to feel like a pcp. I want it to be a springer. I enjoy the challenge.

Most valuable of all - while working, Davy talks. He gives a real insight into what he's doing. He's happy to impart some practical knowledge. I now understand my 97 a lot more.

Porno Chops tuning is born. And, yes, there is a sticker ;)

I've fitted this 97 with a little AGS 3-9x40 scope that has a simple crosshair. It's pure, simple shooting pleasure

So, today there was only one thing for it - I shamelessly skived off work and took my hangover, the PCT97 and a bunch of pellets off to Black Cat HFT.

I spent a long time on the range today. I was there from just after 10am and left at around 4pm........ an excellent way to spend a Sunday :)

I got the rifle warmed up with it's favourite FAPs, then did some 10 shot groups at 30 yards.......

I tried FAPs, H&N FTT, H&N Baracuda Hunter Extreme and JSB Heavy.

For these, the point of aim was the red section in the centre of the target. The JSB Heavies showed real promise.

I also tried some H&N Sniper Magnum - A big ol' 16gn .177 pellet :o

For these, I had to use the top of the bottom post on the reticle. It was like using a german No. 4 reticle.

After using a whole load of Sniper Magnums to shoot a branch off a tree (please dont tell Nige), I went back to the FAPs for some longer range testing.

The back wall of the range is around 60/65 yards. I set up a sheet of A4 and fired 20 shots. The results aren't bad but, I think I definitely need more practice.

This springer punished my bad technique a few times today

I'm over the moon with this and, can't wait to get back out with it again. Thank you Davy - much appreciated

That sounds great and nice sticker! I bet that was fun getting stuck into your 97 with Davy and having a nosey in someone else's man cave. Bloody awsome.

It was mate, he makes it all seem so simple to do. The man cave has little drawers and pots full of everything that you'd ever need to sort a rifle

He'll probably kick my arse when he sees that sticker

O FORGOT TO SAY

THE ONLY THING WRONG WITH YOUR 97 IS

ITS GOT A FECKING BIG HOLE IN THE STOCK

:tongue2: :tongue2: :tongue2:

It's a strange ol' thing but, I find that thumb hole slightly more comfortable to use but, I seem to shoot better when I can shoot thumb up - I seem to fucus more on bringing my thumb and finger together.

Pmsl!??

That sticker is awesome!? Shoot n see birch wood & casey ?

Always here to help John,it's not rocket science fettling but will improve the recoil somewhat.

The key to spring rifle shooting,is consistency with everything .

Hold

Eye relief

Trigger control

Follow through

Breathing

But once you get them all right,it is so much rewarding.

At black cat club we can only encourage good shooting, which was proven today with one of our members shooting 73/80 in the CSFTA winter league.

And you are 100% right it is a challenge Spring rifle shooting, onwards and upwards buddy.
