I got on the property ladder fairly late in life but its all coming together now only 10 years left lol it was all about meeting the right person for me once I met the current wife my life excellerated in terms of what we could achieve with both having the same vision...as D.C. says the minute you think your getting somewhere there's always a unexpected bill to kick you back down ...just been told I need a new roof .....ah well that's just life ain't it ..it will get sorted somehow no point stressing .

lol-whats the chances of that?got a leaky f***ing chimney breast myself☺ and got hit with an 1100 pound bill from my vet yesterday-car been to 3 garages can't find the fault -never rains it pours mun.and thats just this week...atb dc

I guess you could call me old fashironed, others just call me a miserable cnut, but I don't feel the need to fit in with the crowd, and go out every weekend and drink and sniff my way through my weeks

I'm always glad to hear it gets easier because it's certainly not easy now. The kids are warm/fed and want for nowt though and that's all that matters to me.

Looks like I'm the odd one out.......   I've lived under 11 different Prime Ministers - and I've been poor under every one of the f***ers !

you were first married and you struggled to pay the morgage and keep the family with food and clothes and bills, its funny in life when your getting older you have more money then you know what to do with,i think its because everything is paid off your house is more or less paid for and you have the house done to the standards you want it done like, and your kids are up,when i was younger i had a nice car but hardly had the money to run it ,i now have a merc a pajero and my astra van for the birds of prey, but i still remember the hard days where me and our lass flicked a coin to see who was going out on a friday night and who was staying inn

got another 10 yrs left then maybe i'll be in the same boat lol-sometimes it seems like things are looking up only for something to come out of the woodwork and wipe out the savings again :).atvb dc
ive been on that boat myself going round and round non stop fs lol

Got took to the cleaners by my first wife left with just a bin liner of clothes now back on my trotters own business with 6 lads working for me a good woman and house nearly paid for but I have a rainy day fund she knows nothing about and a will so I know the kids are sorted but living on pot noodles and beans on toast in the beginning was hard but it made us closer and appreciate the little treats when we have them and being able to help the kids out if and when they need it

I think for most folk life gets a little easier as we age , I was lucky enough to go in for buying a house in 1985 ish. just before the prices started to increase , so I paid 18 grand for my first house & 2 years later I sold it & moved back to my village , managed to get a 2 bed semi for about 22 grand & I paid it off 5 years ago.

Having no mortgage or rents been a life saver for me , I am at the stage in life now where I dont need to work full time as my wages covers the bills , to be honest I am quite happy if I have a quid in my bank account on payday , I dont go hungry so that will do me

Since I started courting last April he buys me drinks if we go out which is only a couple of times a month as I do let me hair down & at my age hangovers take days to get over

I am really enjoying life , got a bloke who come round mine when he is off work & we have a laugh & are quite happy to watch the telly in the week , I also have a new grandson who I am lucky enough to see every few weeks , so its been lovely buying christmas things for him .

It is hard work when your first starting out , but a lot of the young ones want a show house from day one , all that costs money, I think the only new thing I had was a chip pan in 1986

I think a lot of people don't want on the propertyard market, they more feel inclined to as thats what 'normal' people do along with a 9-5 job, two kids and a wife, that's how you're viewed as a success and if you don't have these you've failed at life.... for example I don't drive and constantly get stick for it off my mates, but when I suggest going out to do something they've never got money for fuel, yet the unsuccessful me could fill there tank for them! A well known author who's name I won't mention, often quoted a philosopher with the quote " a man is rich in proportion to the things he can do without", just food for thought

Enjoyed reading thru this thread...... I am still at the other end of the scale, 3 young kids a wife and mortgaged up to my eyeballs, just moved into a bigger house so the kids have more space inside the house but lost a lot of garden compared to my previous house but needs must hey!

As said before just when you finally think your head is above water ***BANG*** something unexpectedly happens, its a never ending battle at the min and it's nice read there IS a light at the end of the tunnel!

As the older generation that 'have been there done that' will know it's hard to please everyone, I am doing all the overtime I can get my hands on what with moving house and Xmas around the corner but then get it in the neck from the wife as I am never home and always at work!!!! CANT WIN!!

It sure does in my case it was the 84-85 pit strike just when every thing was going along fine with a secure job a mortgage wife and kid then the shit hit the fan with the strike for thousands like me.

I never saw my old man as a kid , he worked 3 shifts for British rail, but he instilled into me that if you want something you have to work for it, life will get easier, I think when your kids are little lifes geared round them & working hard to give them all that they need is basically what your doing it for .

I think you have to set time aside for your other half , dont let life get in the way of your relationship , sometimes a couple of cans & a chippy tea is all it takes & a couple of hours for some catching up with your other half
