Vortex piston seal sorted, Thank you charlie caller he was a gent!

Edit. Also fitted the snap washer. I'll spin the piston in the drill again and gently sand the delrin short stroke to the same profile as the piston and polish afterwards.

After recently buying another old 1987 HW85 and having a play this morning it is shooting within 22 fps variation over 20 shots and has a fair bit of recoil and twang. It is also very graunchy when coc

Standard is standard but if you are using something and not putting it in a museum or entering it into concourse competitions then usable alterations are fine.

It's like putting central heating and double glazing in an old building, or keeping it standard and combatting pneumonia every winter, and not having friends round.

My old Land rover still has the thirsty 2286 engine in it, but I put electronic ignition on it, save pissing around setting the points gap to get it to run evenly. And I swapped the sealed beam candles for Wipac halogen headlights so i could see the walls and the road.

If you started drilling holes in the stock, or fancy swirling on the cylinder, well that's like a max powering your Nova or whatever the Kevins drive these days.

Ha ha nice peskywabbits I'm in the same boat with my landrover. Feel guilty upgrading stuff but it needs doing to make it more pleasurable for daily use. Some people have got in mine and laughed at the basic interior!. Externally you would never know anything different on this old HW85.

Cheers si! Feel a bit guilty messing about with a classic like this (especially as I'm not really a proper airgunner) but had one of the these as a kid. As the story goes I was out with the shotgun as a kid in 1997 and when I came back to a friend who took me out with his shotgus and he had a hw85 in the corner of his quail shed. I saw the 85 and shouted wow! Always wanted one of these. He said you like that? Yes I said, take it with you he said. One of the most memorable moments and best things ever to happen in my childhood It then baught years of joy and top rabbiting memories, a pocket of pellets and lying out by Warrens on an evening. Its hard to shoot and kicked and twanged bigtime. Hence the reason I'd love another and will have the occasional wander with it. I'm more of a shotgun shooter a bit off topic for the airgun section but I'm off longnetting tommorow with the stinkers! But still love airguns and this hw85 is heart warming.

The vortek piston seal has landed

So got to work on the short stroke extension. I put the latch rod into a drill chuck and covered the top of the piston in tape to protect it and spun it nearly down to size....

I then popped on the vorteck Piston seal (top quality strong looking seal)

Then put the piston into the drill chuck and taped the end again and spun it a bit at a time until the short stroke extension and seal where flush with eachother and in between this testing it in the cylendar until the fit was perfect and moved smother down the cylendar with a perfect airtight seal (I put a bit of bum slide on to get a propper idea of fit) the result on the delrin short stroke and back of seal was this....

Well chufed and relieved! The blowtorch still hasn't arrived and I'm getting impatient so going to take the old spring to work to shorten and flatten the old hw spring to get an idea of lentgh I need to get the correct power before cutting the brand new spring.

It's really enjoyable! And been a steep learning curve. It recoiled and rattled like mad! And smoked like a black powder shotgun lol I was a bit shocked such a nicely made gun was so poorly finished and had such a desighn flaw. I'll show you the old cocking shoe at some point and the damage it did to the metal piston liner. Yes it is an old trials bike in the pic I'll find a pic if your interested ?....
