socks 32,253
It's how I make my living and it's no sunshine and flowers that's for sure ... unlike ferreting for fun you can't leave a tricky burry ... you can't say I'm not going because it's pissing down or blowing a gale ... you need enough ferrets and dogs that work to a high standard to be able to work them 7 days a week ... you have to deal with customers that are convinced there are hundreds of rabbits when in fact there's probably a dozen ... you need a lot of nets traps snares etc so you can run a few jobs at a time ... you HAVE to catch every rabbit ... in the winter your either wet cold or both and covered in mud ... in the summer your hot sweaty getting stung by insects and plants etc .......... 5 Quote Link to post
Plucky1 1,119
I run a pest control business with my mate but we are both lucky enough to not need an income from it to pay the bills,we do a lot of rabbit control but find the milage can be a difficult factor when pricing a job, I find people are more willing to pay for pigeon and fox control,we charge per visit or per fox depending on the initial survey, which we charge for, rats can also be a decent little earner as well but as socks says you do need decent equipment and plenty of it to run multiple jobs together,we also work very unsocial hours of a night using night vision and the best rifles, guns, etc that are available,we constantly buy the best and you need to be an excellent shot as you may only get one and that may be with your client present, good insurance is a must with public liability if you are working in public spaces as we do flying hawks to deter pigeons, seagulls etc, you have to earn trust and be able to network into the better work, stadiums, sports grounds, etc keeping keys for unsocial hours access, that takes up most of my week but keeps plenty of sport in front of my dogs, hawks, ferrets, etc, I would hate to have to rely on it for a main income and my mate has a very good income from his other business,s,it can also be a chore trave!!ing an hour to kill a fox before the staff arrive for work when you,be been out lamping the night before, anything becomes like work eventually and that is why we pick and choose what we do, WM 2 Quote Link to post
