Is This Real? Starting A Car With A Dead Battery.

Recommended Posts

Yea cant see why that wouldnt work.

And as tiercel said about the diff is spot on.

I remember a lad showing me a trick before how to charge a flat car battery.

He had a diesel car.

Started the car.removed the battery and put a flat battery on the car wbile running.letting the alternator charge the flat battery.

The car didnt stop running with no battery as it was a diesel.

Obviously wouldnt work with a petrol engine as that needs a spark to keep running.

It does work with petrol engines.....the revs normally drop when the battery is disconnected
i used to have an old boat, with an old BMC petrol engine an I used to do the same on a regular basis, always carried two battery's because if I flattened one over night, I could start it of the spare and then swap to charge the dead one.

Feck all that nonsense I just get my starting handle out,

The dif it puts the drive to the wheel with least resistance.   TC

Don't think I've driven a car with a split diff on the front only, had 4x4's that have diffs in the middle, or maybe I just drive shite motors.

If your cars do not have a diff how do you turn corners in them without ripping your tyres to shreds. (Outside wheel is travelling further than the inside wheel.) All cars have diffs they have to, 4x4's have more than one.

Maybe I do then.

Were you a mechanic Tiercel or do the ither lads just know feck all about motors!!

I used to do a bit of rallying when I was younger, and the torque on limited slip differentials was a hot topic back then. Fecking hate working on cars. I was sponsored by Bob Fowden motor sports. He had a mini with a LSD in, drove it once what a beast just point the front wheels and the back would follow soooooo much grip it was unbelievable.

I can't see how that can work ... if he has put the car in gear and started it and that wheel is turning why doesn't the other remaining drive wheel push the car off the jack ......

Not just that, what happens when you start a car that's in gear without using the clutch? It jumps and dies, it does not speed off down the road

it`ll jump and die because its not yet producing enough torque to keep going but if one wheel is off the ground and its not got an LSD its only like starting a motor with a heavy flywheel, this will work on older cars when there`s not enough battery to start it cranking or the starters not working, modern motors with all the power hungry sensors and other components will not start if there`s not enough battery power, 9v is about the minimum needed, if your battery can`t provide that with ignition on then don`t bother either towing it or bumping it down a hill, it aint going to start

I had a car like that VW golf twice the clutch cable snapped......turn engine off put it in gear and turn the ignition and it jump starts

I remember changing up was easier than changing down without a clutch

I used to insist all my family drivers new this method for the exact situation you mention. Bit of throttle and your off.

Stopping for lights i shut it off roll stop then key bump off. Works better on certain cars, some hate it.Also helps get you out traffic to side road etc if you have certain issue with the car .I.e running out of fuel. If only more road users new this technique !
