minion 29
What do you feel the best cross is for a working lurcher in Scotland? Most of the dogs around where I come from are lurcher to lurcher crosses. My own current dog is a pure whippet as I only work rabbits and hare and t be honest my wife likes whippets. I have always been a collie lurcher fan and my last lurcher was a 3/4 grey 1/4 border and she was great for me. Fast enough for hare and easy to train. Having young kids and a small house ment we opted for a smaller dog and I am hopeful the whippet will do the business for me. Just wonderd (no reason other than for something to talk about) what the other guys up here have - or would prefer. Do you need a fast dog or lots of stamina - or both. Thought it would be an intresting debate - whats your thoughts Quote Link to post

Thought it would be an intresting debate - whats your thoughts a lot would depend the type of ground and what game your using it for i prefer saluki cross greyhounds the ground is very heavy going and quite hilly so seem to be best for where i hunt most dogs in my area are saluki cross though one or two of lads round here seem quite keen on the deer hound lurcher because of the terrain guess lot also depends on the heart of the dog and how game he or she is Quote Link to post
Guest SJM
Scotlands a big place with lots of varied terrain, moors, flat fields etc so thats a hard question to answer. We dont have anything as big as the fens, but we do have some decent fields dotted about across the country. I would say it depends on what your running, I like collie crosses for rabbiting and on the moors, allthough Ive seen some cracking lurcher x lurcher bitzas too. For the flat fields, a fast dog with a good mouth is whats needed, something that can kill them quick before they get off into the woods or through hedges. A really good dog should be able to kill them anywhere though Quote Link to post
luke 2
i run both whippets and lurchers mate some times the ground suits the whippets some times the lurcher i get a buzz out of watching both the rapid assault of the whippets were if she can stay a live for the first two minutes shes a way or the grinding course of the lurcher cant choose love both Quote Link to post

A really good dog should be able to kill them anywhere though I mosty run my dogs in the Borders, Midlothian, East and West Lothian. Try not to go to the same spots to often incase it gets hot. Dont travel to far just vary the locations. Alot of the fields are a decent size and I dont know how the whippet will be if the hares get a chance to use the field - only time will tell. Am just going to take the pup out just now. Hopefully I will get a wee run for her. Quote Link to post

Yes I have a few pics but I cant find the lead for the camera. I will take it with me to the office in the morning if I cant find it and put her pics up. There are pics of her on thewhippetforum.com under whippets in the field if you are a member on there? They are a few months old though. Quote Link to post
