Does anyone do this in the uk. I had a little whippet cross back in the 80s that was a master at catching squirrel, they normally run up the tree to a safe height then turn round and start chattering, she mastered a tequniqe were she ran flat out after the squirrel and as they stopped to turn she would hit the trunk and shoot upwards grabbing them off the trunk in the process, I never took it really serious, just on walks in the local wood her best trip was five squirrels in a couple of hours, she also went to ground and would quickly kill a fox on here own, I paid £2.50 for her in the local dog pound, and back in the days when everything was legal, she killed everything,
Neal 1,873
Thanks to the absence of rabbits in my neck of the woods, treed squirrels is about the only thing we do get nowadays...or at least it would be if it was legal. ...which it's not so I leave the poor cuddly little things alone.

mroak 130
I thought you could hunt the grey one's. what if your just using a dog to tree the squirrel and identify which tree has a squirrel in for the hunter to shoot on private property like in the videos. would that still be illegal
Welsh_red 4,652
In one of my squirell books a bloke used his dog to tree a squirell on the opposite site to him so the squirell went to the opposite side of the trunk to the dog for the guy to shoot the squirell
DogFox123 1,379
My old Patterdale used to eat trees when he chased them, better than any Beaver...
gamerooster 1,179
It's illegal to kill any mammal species with dogs bar rats and rabbits, if invasive species where fair game mink packs would still be on the go
j j m 6,540
i never knew that
Neal 1,873
I'm afraid gamerooster's right. I know it's ridiculous but then again everything about the hunting with dogs act is. Not sure how it applies to treeing them and then shooting with air-rifle or catapult though.
BGD 6,436
I'd think treeing squirrels would count as flushing so perfectly legal I'd imagine as long as you're using a legal means of dispatch?
