Should Staffs Be Banned ?

Recommended Posts

ive never owned a bad staffi yet ,but they have always been trained properly, people that leave young kids in a room with any dog are asking for trouble

I have about 10 year ago,a brindle bitch bought as 8 week pup ,it was about 18 months old, when it attacked my shepherd Lurcher I went to separate them,it was that fired up it snapped at me, I hit it once, then grabbed its lead an took it straight into vets PTS.
What was the reason the staff attacked the lurcher.
From what I can gather the lurcher had the nerve to walk inbetween me an the staff, we was out in back garden,I had the lurcher before the staff as well, the staff wasnt a tall one,but she wasn't one of these roly poly types either .
So you got the dog pts? Let's rephrase that, you got a dog killed that is a sporting dog breed bred to fight for attacking another dog, and because you panicked and stuck your hand in between them she went for you? I hope your lurcher doesn't chase small animals, unless that to fancies a one way trip to the vets!!! The issue is nuggets choking a dogs natarul instinct, I've said this before but when a dog stops being bred for its original use, that's when the bother starts
So you are saying nobody should own a staff unless they use it for its original use.

Bollocks

Yeah, dog showing.....
The 1 and only reason every dog breed exists.

Is from working dogs.

So people who dont want to work dogs.aint allowed a dog.

Bollocks

But the Staff was bred to be a show dog.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier was bred to be left with the kids, while mum and dad went to work. They were once known as "the nanny dog" and, to this day, they are the only dog whose breed standard states that they "must be good with people, especially children"....

I've owned several, over the years, and I've found them to be loyal, brave and surprisingly intelligent (a lot of people think they're a bit thick !) - but then I treated them all as they should be - as dogs, not a weapon to intimidate people, or as 'daddys little baby'.

But that's not the reason they were bred. They were bred by folk who didn't have the stomach for matching and wanted a tidy looking animal that resembled the pit dogs.

Is this the reason they were bred.

Or was you around way back in the day and seen with your own eyes.

Why the staffs were bred.

http://www.thestaffordshirebullterrier.co.uk/history.htm

Ok then...... the Staff has been officially bred to be a show dog for 80 years plus but you know best....

You said the staff was bred for a show dog.

So back in the day did someone say lets cross a terrier and bulldog so we can show them lol.

We aint interested in working ability or what the cross can bring to the table.

We just want to show them and win rossettes lol

But they weren't the Staff were they? They are the dogs that went on to become the APBT....

Fanciers from Staffordshire bred the dogs for their looks, sometimes you gotta think out of the box King boy.

I remember my old mate a staff man.

Telling me that no 1 man can be good at everything.

But you seem to be an expert on every topic on thl

Not an expert, just more of one than you... ?

If you want to start a thread on Staff history then go ahead, this isn't the topic.

Some folk are so quick to happily hand over their rights and freedom on the back of a bit of tabloid outrage, it's honestly worrying.

heres some of mine years back,2 of the 3 were in the house regularly, all were busy through their lives, never had an incident with any folk with them...Placid and knew where they stood in the family ..

Ive allways listened to the older generation who have had more experience of life than myself on certain subjects.

And i will listen to there answer when i ask a question.

And funnily enough none of them ever claimed to be an expert.

But i will say.

They knew what they were on a obout.

Anyone is free to own any dog they want in my eyes, it's just my opinion that people who don't work there dogs have ruined pretty much every dog breed there is, if you want something nice to look at get some tropical fish.... there was still staffs being used in the 80'states, the reason they went out of fashion as a working dog was because a better dog come along, but that's a story for another time

....I'm very undecided on this...

I spend my life campaigning for us to be allowed to live our lives as we see fit.

If I lived in the middle of nowhere I'd have some bull breeds. I'm very interested in the history of heavy working dogs.

We can repeat till we are blue in the face ' it's not the dog it's the owner's but we simply cannot ban or control the owners.

I have a toddler and an oap mother who walks a small dog.....I just don't know the answer

Yes they were being used, Duke, arguably the best Staff ever was off KC stock though. Like you said, Staff's were used because they didn't have anything better to play with until a certain breed arrived.

An idiot that owns a dog is still an idiot no matter what dog they have on the end of a lead. Once they start targeting specific breeds of dogs to ban them through a few idiots who owned them they will move onto other breeds of dogs and look to ban them once there is any incidents with them breeds of dogs.

My staff's dad was lovely if he knew you but was edgy around those he didn't, dogs inc. Now look at her; she is hundred percent unless you pose a threat to those she holds dear. She has always been around my kids and now she is with my mum who weighs nothing and she's as protective as they come. I blame owners raging them instead of teaching them.... this dog in question was owned by a copper though so it'll be hushed ;)

Wrong environments with dogs in are a recipe for disaster, not for me to judge, bit just passing an opinion, wether it be a staffy an Alsatian or a jack Russell if you have two young children under the age of three and a house to run, how do you give the dog the attention time, and training it needs?

I am not blaming the mother because as a kid my mother had doberman and 3 kids and I cannot recall the dog ever raising a growl in all the years we owned him, in fact as a kid I can hardly recall any serious dog bites, yet everyday now it seems to be happening, I don't think for one minute it's the breed of the dog, but more of the breeding of the dogs. Bad dog bred to bad dog = bad pups? coupled with a bad owner who gets the blame? ......... the dog, and the breed gets demonised.

The dog responsible for the most personal injury claims is the Labrador, while two recent fatal attacks have involved Jack Russell's.......should we ban these breeds, too ?

Labrador's might bite but they rarely carry out the prolonged attacks that bull breeds do when they turn.

Collies lash out then back away, whereas a bull breed like the one that killed the baby then mauled the other child and mother, was probably loving every minute on the carnage it was unleashing.

Just trying to shed some light on the myth that bull breeds are responsible for most injuries, mate.

Like I said, I've had several Stafford's, and never had a problem with them.

Poor kid. However its achieved there needs to be some control over these type of dog. Too many young children are losing their lives needlessly,

Ive read the comments about its the owners fault and to some extent I agree however there aren't only bad owners of staffs, all types of dogs have bad owners but you don't hear of cocker spaniels or whippets killing children.

RIP.
