kanny 20,639
Rip little one... Just been on the radio it was a "staffy type" by all accounts... Now I know people won't like this and neither do I but we can't keep having kids killed like this it's not on... I know that it's totally down to the idiots who get dogs they have no real understanding of and that decent dog owners shouldn't be penalised because of them but I really think that it's time to introduce a insurance type system... The more capable the dog the more you pay just like cars.. Dogs under a certain level should be free.

northern lad 2,292
I seem to be a minority on here,my dogs live in,always have.I ,ve had bullmastiffs, staff,s,bulldogs, terriers of various types and never had a problem with them around my kids, their friends, nephews and nieces allways used to have a houseful.I would never leave any child alone in a room with any of the dogs ,regardless of size etc any of the dogs showed any sign of aggression they would have been pts same day (this never happened) .Personally I think its usually a case of the owner being naïve ,in others its been plain stupidity, but in a lot of cases kids don't know how to behave around dogs....Surely I haven't been" lucky" for 40 odd years...
Tiercel 6,986
There is something that does not add up in this tragic case. The mother of the children is not the owner of the dog. I have read one report that states the dogs owner is a police woman. This has yet to be confirmed by the police. If the above is true then it seems as if the woman was dog sitting. RIP little un. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3837711/Baby-boy-dies-child-seriously-injured-attacked-dog.html TC Edited October 14, 2016 by Tiercel

I would kennel any further dogs I keep outside
Lid 194
I heard this on he radio earlier today. Very sad and tragic. RIP to the baby and I hope the injured child, at least, is OK. It really doesn't bear thinking about though.

The more capable the dog the more you pay just like cars.. Dogs under a certain level should be free. Ive been saying this for years........ a teenager can legally drive a Ferrari around inner city streets possibly causing carnage as he go,s but he is made to pay through the teeth insurance wise for being an obvious risk to society in general........that same teenager can legally own the most dangerous dog he can find with absolutely no dent to his pocket at all. Personally id like to see it taken even further and have restrictions on breeds half the breeds around today are pointless,a dog should be a help and a companion if its just a pet/companion it doesnt need to have many of the traits people are buying pet dogs with.......much as i dislike imposing more laws there has to be some kind of control or you end up with no control.....just look at the immigration problem ! There's a few breeds doing the rounds now that are big/aggressive enough to kill adults never mind kids and imo there's absolutely no need for a dog like that in this day and age. The lads who own them argue they can control them etc but what happens if it gets out or something.

The lads who own them argue they can control them etc but what happens if it gets out or something. its got to be a macho thing, to want to own dogs that could maim or kill a person or child ours were all ways kept out side in kennel+runs tis was back in 60s and didnt here of many dog attacks back then, because how the dogs were kept and trained . i see regular these designer type dogs ( lab x poodle and cocker x poodle etc) and being honest they nice temp dogs , deff the little cocker x poo they seem great family dogs the kids love them what ive seen of them. My 2 lurchers will play with them,Buck very gentle with this little dogs. But the one thing i think wrong is the price people pay for them, bloody £800 -£ 1000 quid, ive told them before you get old mongrel = x breed from the pound for £ 50 quid, my 2 dogs only cost £40 Bryn, and Buck £40 quid lol , all of them x breeds and make brill pets but suppose even these money making dogs are better for in house with kids , if you got to keep a dog in a house .!!
