Who Keeps Quail??

Recommended Posts

I think chicks reAred by a hen are less prone to illness than incubator chicks , that's just my opinion tho , the hen weeds out and sick and I'll chicks and just find the chicks to be of a better standard than incubator chicks . From the moment they pop out of the shell there in the inciroment that they will be living in where as incubator chicks are in a cleaned incubator then in to a brooder box /pen then in to the outdoors , . Start as thee mean to go on

Makes sense, I'll be sticking with the incubator though because as I said I don't want to keep chickens.

And now the work starts, although they are easier than pheasants, [ a soon as they are out of the shell all they want to do is die ] i once did a couple of hundred in a incubator and one of the kids o

I think mine liked the fact they where just left alone.and that they couldn't see outside people going past dogs ect.there's windows and plenty of light but high walls.i have shavings floor, few small

I know they taste nice, lol but so do bantams eggs and they are easier to keep.

All has settled down nicely with my quail now, no more fighting at all. The odd hen with some feathers pulled out of the back of her head when the cock has been to keen but other than that fine.

Spoke to soon, got a hen with a severely pecked head. Purple antiseptic spray is an essential with these birds.

Damn just sexed the chicks and out of 17 I've got 2 hens 10 roos 5 that are English whites so I won't be sure until they start producing the foam, I had a look at the vents anyway and they look male to me.

Are some cockerels inclined to produce more males than females or am I just unlucky? Anyone else ever had a ratio as bad as this?

I used to breed quail and 3/4 of the chicks turned out to be males, absolute pain in the ass. I bred hundreds of the suckers too.

It's annoying I was hoping for between 7 and 10 hens out of that lot, I'll give it another go very soon and see what I get.
