Greyman 28,628
I only cut forks in January and February because there is less moisture and toxins in the wood, I mostly cut from hazel bush,s unless I see something special, and I never get a split in the wood, as soon as the sap rises at the start of March the wood is likely to split, it's the same with walking stick shafts, January is the month to gather wood, if you have some forks you can give them a two minute blast in the microwave to drive the moisture out and season the wood artificially, that's about it for my forks, I will be out cutting again after Christmas, it only takes a few hours to get a box full which will last me all year, others will have different advice but that's what works for me cheers
ernesto 30
We made them from privet bushes when kids, take the bark off with pocket knife.use one of your old bike tyers, inner tube cut lenghts approx. three eights wide by twelve inches long.then for the pouch get some soft leather two inch by one inch, put two holes in one either end double the end of the inner tube to thread through the two holes.bind each end together holding the pouch in place.then either bind each end of the tube to the each end of the fork.i used elastic bands found it easier.just made sure each length of inner tube was same length two pocket full of road chippings bingo another good day over the fields.were talking 1950s here thougth.just a bit of useless info.ATB.
